- Referral to the CADA after a refused document request (France)For someone to whom a French administration refused a document, or did not answer within a month. The Commission d'accès aux documents administratifs (CADA) is approached free, preferably through the online form on its website. This letter, in French under French law, refers the matter by post: it names the administration, the date of the request, the documents and the answer received, and asks for a favourable opinion. Referral within two months of the refusal is compulsory before the administrative court.
- Request for details of the reasons for dismissal (France)A letter for an employee dismissed in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte, asking the employer to make precise the reasons given in the dismissal letter (articles L. 1235-2 and R. 1232-13 or R. 1233-2-2 of the Labour Code). It must go within fifteen days of being notified of the dismissal, by registered post with proof of receipt or by hand against a receipt; the employer then has fifteen days to answer. A standard form: it does not challenge the dismissal and does not replace an application to the employment tribunal. In French.
- Request for a termination by mutual agreement (rupture conventionnelle) (France)A rupture conventionnelle is concluded and approved free of charge online, through the French labour ministry's TéléRC service, and the ministry's site code.travail.gouv.fr has a free model request for a meeting; this document is only the letter that proposes one. For an employee on an open-ended contract (CDI) in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte, it asks for a meeting with a view to ending the contract by mutual agreement (articles L. 1237-11 to L. 1237-16 of the Labour Code), without amounting to a resignation, and can give a preferred end date. Send it by registered post with proof of receipt or hand it over against a receipt. In French.
- Request for a payment plan for a tax bill (France)For someone who cannot pay their income tax, property tax or council tax in one go and proposes a schedule to the public accountant. The request can be made free through the secure messaging of your personal space on impots.gouv.fr, or at the counter of the office named on the notice. This French letter is for sending it by post: the sum due, the difficulties, the instalments proposed, and an undertaking to pay future taxes. Ask before the payment deadline.
- Request to the landlord for rent receipts (France)For a tenant in France who needs rent receipts — for a rental application, housing aid, a loan, proof of address — and does not receive them. The French letter recalls that the landlord must give them free, with rent and charges shown separately (art. 21 of the French law of 6 July 1989), lists the periods requested and, if you wish, gives your express consent to receive them by e-mail. Ordinary post is enough; registered post keeps proof.
- Request for an exception to the school catchment area (France)For a parent who wants their child in a French state nursery or primary school other than the catchment one, in the same commune or another. If the town hall has its own form, free of charge, use it. Otherwise this letter in French to the mayor identifies the child, the catchment school and the school requested, and gives the ground: a brother or sister at the school, work constraints, medical reasons certified under separate cover, or another reason. No exception is a right. For collège and lycée, the request goes to the academic director.
- Request for the landlord's consent to sublet (France)For a tenant in France who wishes to sublet all or part of the home, short-term lets on a platform included. The French letter asks for the landlord's written consent, including on the price, as art. 8 of the French law of 6 July 1989 requires, states the period, the area and the sub-rent against the rent per square metre of the lease, and carries a consent slip the landlord dates and signs. By registered letter with proof of receipt.
- Referral to the housing conciliation commission (France)For a tenant or landlord in France in dispute over rent, a rent supplement, the inventory of condition, the deposit, service charges, repairs, decency or a notice. The French letter asks the commission départementale de conciliation, free and made up of landlords' and tenants' representatives, to bring the parties together (art. 20 of the French law of 6 July 1989), sets out the dispute and the request and lists the documents. By registered letter with proof of receipt to the address the préfecture publishes.
- Request to write off an overpayment from the CAF, CPAM or France Travail (France)For someone who must repay a benefit paid in error (an overpayment) and cannot afford it, in mainland France or the overseas departments other than Mayotte. Without disputing the debt, the French letter asks for a full or partial write-off, or a payment plan, setting out the household's income, outgoings and situation; the law allows the claim to be reduced or cancelled for hardship, except for fraud or false declarations. To dispute the overpayment itself, an appeal is needed instead. Sold blank, to complete by hand, social security number included. Sent by registered post.
- Request for unpaid leave, a sabbatical or business start-up leave (France)A request from an employee in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte to suspend the contract without pay: unpaid leave (congé sans solde), which the employer is free to grant, a sabbatical (articles L. 3142-28 et seq. of the French Labour Code) or leave to set up or take over a business (articles L. 3142-105 et seq.). It gives the dates and, where relevant, the reason or the business's activity. For the two statutory leaves, send it at least three months (sabbatical) or two months (start-up) ahead, in a way that proves the date (registered post with proof of receipt, or hand delivery against a receipt), unless a collective agreement says otherwise. In French.
- Covering letter for a change of first name (France)For a person asking to change their first name, or that of a minor over whom they exercise parental authority. The application itself is made on Cerfa form 16233 (adult) or 16234 (minor), free on service-public.gouv.fr: you do not need DocMuse for it. This French letter goes with the form: it sets out the legitimate interest the civil registrar weighs (article 60 of the French Civil Code) and lists the proof enclosed. It is filed at the town hall of residence or of the place of birth, often by appointment.
- Request for tax remission on grounds of hardship (France)For someone in hardship or poverty who cannot pay their income tax, property tax or council tax, or the surcharges added to it, even with extra time. The request can be made free through the secure messaging of your personal space on impots.gouv.fr. This French letter to the tax office is for sending it by post: the tax concerned, the hardship or poverty, the household's income and outgoings, and the full or partial remission sought (article L. 247 of the French Tax Procedures Book).
- Request for the employment certificate and end-of-contract documents (France)A letter for an employee whose contract has ended in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte and who has not received the documents due: the certificat de travail (article L. 1234-19 of the Labour Code), the certificate for France Travail, the public employment service (article R. 1234-9), and the final-settlement receipt (article L. 1234-20). It lists what is missing, sets a deadline and says that, failing that, the employment tribunal's urgent-applications judge will be asked to order it. Send it by registered post with proof of receipt. In French.
- Request for a school certificate or school file (France)For a parent, or an adult pupil, who needs a certificate of school attendance (for the CAF, an employer, a grant body), a leaving certificate after a move, the transfer of the school file to the new school, or a copy of the school report book. The certificate is often a free download from the school's digital workspace (ENT), and the report book from ÉduConnect: check there first. In French, the letter to the head identifies the pupil, the document wanted and who it is for.
- Request for administrative documents (France)For obtaining from a French administration — town hall, préfecture, public hospital, school, public body — a copy of a document it holds: a decision, a report, a file, minutes. The letter, in French under French law, cites the right of access (articles L. 311-1 ff. of the French Code of Relations between the Public and the Administration), lists the documents, the chosen form of access and partial disclosure, and recalls that one month's silence counts as refusal, opening referral to the CADA. Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.
- Request for access to a medical record (France)For a patient who wants their medical record from a French hospital, clinic or doctor. In French, the letter relies on article L. 1111-7 of the French Public Health Code, lists the documents requested and chooses the form of access: a copy by post, consultation on the spot or sending to a designated doctor. It recalls the eight-day deadline, two months for information over five years old, and that only copying and postage may be charged. Sold blank, to complete by hand. Sent by registered post with a copy of an ID.
- Request to a creditor for time to pay (France)For someone in France who cannot pay a debt in one go — an invoice, a credit, rent, a sum claimed by a collection agency — and proposes a payment plan to the creditor. The letter, in French under French law, recalls the sum and where it comes from, explains the difficulty, proposes a number of monthly instalments and their amount, asks for collection to be suspended during the plan and recalls that a judge can grant up to two years (article 1343-5 of the French Civil Code). Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.
- Request for a certificate of French tax residence (France)For someone tax-resident in France who is asked by a foreign state, bank or employer for a certificate of tax residence, to apply a tax treaty and avoid double taxation. The request can be made free through the secure messaging of your personal space on impots.gouv.fr. This French letter to the individual tax office (SIP) is for sending it by post or reusing its wording: year, foreign state, form 731 or the foreign form to be certified.
- Paid leave request (France)A paid-leave request from an employee to the employer in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte: first and last day, the number of days counted in jours ouvrables or jours ouvrés, the date of return, and room for the employer's signed agreement. Leave is earned at two and a half jours ouvrables per month worked (article L. 3141-3 of the French Labour Code); the employer sets the order in which staff take it. An e-mail often does; the letter keeps a written record of the agreement. In French.
- Request to the town hall to enrol a child at school (France)For a parent enrolling a child in a French state nursery or primary school, for the first time or after a move. Many town halls have their own form or a free online portal: use it if there is one. Otherwise this letter in French to the school affairs department asks for enrolment and for the certificat d’inscription to show the head teacher (article L. 131-5 of the French Education Code), and lists the documents: family record book or birth certificate, proof of address, vaccinations.
- Referral to the consumer mediator (France)For a consumer in France whose written complaint to a business went unanswered or unresolved. Two free routes exist: reporting on SignalConso, the DGCCRF's service, which does not settle your dispute, and the online referral form many mediators offer. The consumer mediator proposes a solution, free of charge (Article L. 612-1 of the French Consumer Code). This letter refers the case by post: it sets out the dispute, the prior complaint and your request. Send it within a year of that complaint (Article L. 612-2). In French.
- Referral to the bank mediator (France)For a customer of a French bank whose written complaint was rejected, or went unanswered for two months. The mediator the bank has appointed is free to use, often through an online form on its website. This letter, in French under French law, refers the matter by post: it recalls your complaint, the dispute and what you ask for, and shows the referral is admissible — a prior written complaint, referral within a year, no other mediator or court involved (article L. 612-2 of the French Consumer Code).
- Invitation letter for a visa application (France)For someone in France inviting a foreign relative or friend who needs a visa, for a private visit of under three months. The official document is the attestation d’accueil (Cerfa 10798), which the host requests in person at the town hall, with a €30 tax stamp. This letter, in French under French law, goes with it in the visa file without replacing it: it presents the guest, the dates and purpose of the stay, the accommodation and the costs the host covers. The guest attaches it to the visa application.
- Subject access request under the GDPR (France)For finding out what a company, administration or association based in France knows about you. The CNIL publishes a free model letter; this letter, in French, follows the same right and goes further: confirmation of processing, a copy of the data, purposes, recipients, retention period, source and automated decisions (article 15 of the GDPR), an answer within one month (article 12), first copy free. It announces a complaint to the CNIL if there is no reply. Send it by post or through the channel named in the privacy policy.
