Common questions

How is a French certificate of tax residence obtained without a letter?
Through the secure messaging of your personal space on impots.gouv.fr, free of charge: choose the request for a document and give the year and the state concerned, attaching the foreign form if there is one. The individual tax office replies in your space or by post. It can take several weeks, so ask as soon as the foreign body requests it. The letter is for those who prefer to write by post.
Form 731 or the foreign form for a French residence certificate?
If the foreign authority or body provides its own form, fill it in, attach it to the request and ask the tax office to certify it. Otherwise ask for the certificate on the French administration's form 731, written in several languages. The letter carries this choice. An income tax notice is not a certificate of residence: some bodies accept it, others require the certificate stamped by the tax office.
Who can obtain a French certificate of tax residence?
A person whose tax household is in France and who declares their income there: they ask the individual tax office they belong to, shown on their tax notice. Tax residence does not depend on nationality: what counts is the household, the main place of stay, the work or the centre of economic interests. People established outside France are handled by the non-residents' tax office.
