A written demand is the step at which a debt stops being a conversation and becomes a matter of record. It identifies the obligation and the ground for it, gives a specific deadline, and states what follows if it is not paid. Send it so that there is a trace of its receipt — recorded delivery with a signature, or a notarial demand if the sum justifies it.

Common questions
- What use is it when the debtor already knows they owe the money?
- The demand fixes the date from which they were told, and default and interest run from there. It also turns the dispute from a conversation into a documented debt, which is necessary for every step that follows.
- How should I send it so that it counts?
- In a way that proves receipt — recorded delivery with a signature, by hand against signature, and for larger sums by notarial demand. Sent by ordinary post it proves dispatch but not receipt.
- Can I add interest and costs?
- Yes, if they are due. That is why the demand separates the principal from the interest and any penalty — the debtor then sees how the figure was arrived at, rather than one lump sum that is easy to dispute.
- What follows if they do not pay?
- Enforced collection through the prescribed route, with the costs usually falling on the debtor. The demand is the document showing that the voluntary option was given to them.
