For someone living in Malta who is inviting a relative or friend from outside the Schengen area: a signed letter to the Maltese embassy, consulate or visa centre giving your details and status in Malta, the visitor's passport details, the purpose and dates of the visit, where they will stay, who pays, and your promise that they will leave on time. Check the consulate's own checklist first; the visitor sends it with the application.

Common questions
- What does a Maltese consulate want with a visa invitation letter?
- Each Maltese embassy, consulate or visa centre, or the consulate of the Schengen country that represents Malta where it has none, publishes its own checklist, so read that first; it is free. The checklists ask for an original, recent and signed invitation giving the purpose, the dates and where the visitor will stay, a copy of the host's ID card or passport and, for a host who is not an EU citizen, the Maltese residence permit. If you pay for the visit, say so in the letter and add proof of income.
- Does an invitation letter guarantee a visa for a visit to Malta?
- No. The decision is the consulate's and, within Malta, Identità's Central Visa Unit, on the whole application: the visitor's own documents, money, insurance and reasons to return home. The letter shows who the host is and what the visit is for. Some posts also ask for a sponsor's declaration signed before a notary, so check the checklist.
- Can I invite someone to Malta if I am not a Maltese citizen?
- Yes. A foreign resident can invite a visitor; write your status in Malta, such as single permit holder or EU citizen resident in Malta, and enclose a copy of your residence document. What you write must be true: a false statement can lead to the visa being refused and can affect later applications.

Related documents
- Parental consent for a child to travel (Malta)
For a parent or legal guardian in Malta whose child is travelling abroad without them, or with only the other parent, a relative, a school or a friend: a signed consent naming the child, the passport, the destinations, the dates and the adult in charge, with your contact details. Carriers and border officers may ask to see one. It is not the consent for a child's passport, which Identità handles on its own form.
- Power of attorney for a single matter (Malta)
For someone in Malta who needs another person to act for them in one named matter only — collecting documents, dealing with a bank, a car transfer or a utility account while they are abroad: a special mandate under articles 1856 to 1864 of the Civil Code (Cap. 16) that names the matter, spells out each power, sets an end date and is accepted by the attorney's signature. Not for property deeds, wills or court cases.
- Acknowledgement of debt (Malta)
For a debtor in Malta who confirms in writing how much they owe a creditor, and for the creditor who asks for it — a private loan, unpaid rent, money owed between friends or businesses. Signed by the debtor, the acknowledgement interrupts prescription under article 2133 of the Civil Code (Cap. 16), so the time already run no longer counts. An optional plan sets monthly instalments. The debtor signs; the creditor keeps the original.
- Inventory and condition record for a lease (Malta)
For a landlord and tenant in Malta signing a private residential lease. It records the condition of each room and of the furniture and appliances the landlord supplies, the meter readings and the keys, and lists the numbered photographs with a short description of each, as article 6 of the Private Residential Leases Act requires — even for an unfurnished home. All parties sign it and keep a copy; it is attached to the lease, and the deposit is measured against it when the lease ends.
- Move-out handover record for a lease (Malta)
For a landlord and tenant in Malta at the end of a lease, when the keys are handed back. It records the keys returned, the final meter readings, the condition of each room compared with the inventory signed at the start, any damage the landlord points out with the tenant's comments, what is agreed about the deposit, and the tenant's new address. Both sign it on the day and each keeps a copy; signing does not mean accepting a deduction not written in it.
- Mutual non-disclosure agreement (Malta)
For two businesses or individuals in Malta who will share confidential information while they talk about working together — a joint project, an investment, a supplier or partner relationship. Each promises to keep the other's information confidential, use it only for the stated purpose and return or destroy it on request, for a number of years both choose; trade secrets are also protected by the Trade Secrets Act (Cap. 589). Both sign it, and each keeps an original.
