Common questions

When does a Swiss tax office allow payment in instalments?
If paying on time would cause you considerable hardship, the collecting authority may extend the payment period or allow instalments; it may waive interest for that time and ask for security (Art. 166 DFTA). Similar rules apply to cantonal taxes, in Zurich § 177 StG. If you miss an instalment, the arrangement is revoked (Art. 166 para. 3 DFTA). Some cantons, such as Solothurn, take these requests online.
Where do I send a request to pay Swiss taxes in instalments?
To the office that issued the tax invoice; its name and address are on the invoice. If the invoice for cantonal and communal taxes and the one for the federal direct tax come from two different offices, send a request to each. Do it before the payment period ends: otherwise default interest runs on what is unpaid, and the authority may start debt enforcement.
How do Swiss tax instalments differ from tax remission?
With payment facilities the whole tax stays owed; you only pay it later or in instalments. Remission cancels the tax in whole or part where paying it would mean great hardship because of distress (Art. 167 DFTA and the cantonal acts); it needs its own request and stricter conditions. An objection is something else again: it contests the assessment itself, within 30 days of notification.
