Common questions

Who receives a request to pay Liechtenstein taxes in instalments?
The collecting authority (Bezugsbehörde), the body that collects the tax (Art. 131 Abs. 1 SteG): wealth and income tax is collected by the municipalities' Gemeindesteuerkassen, the other taxes by the Steuerverwaltung (Art. 126 Abs. 1 SteG). Send the request to the body that issued the invoice, with its address, before the payment period ends, by registered post.
When does Liechtenstein's collecting authority allow deferral or instalments?
Where paying taxes, back taxes, interest, costs or fines on time would be a considerable hardship, it may, on request, allow deferral, instalments or other payment relief (Art. 131 Abs. 1 SteG). Prove the hardship with documents on income, outgoings and assets. If the conditions fall away or an instalment is not paid, the relief is revoked (Art. 131 Abs. 2 SteG).
Can Liechtenstein waive a tax instead of allowing instalments?
Yes, in a separate procedure: where paying would be an unreasonable hardship, taxes, interest, costs or fines can be remitted in whole or in part; the request goes to the Steuerverwaltung, which hears the municipalities concerned (Art. 132 Abs. 1 and 2 SteG). A refusal can be appealed to the Government within 30 days of service (Art. 132 Abs. 3 SteG). This template asks for instalments only.
Does an objection delay payment in Liechtenstein, and is this template tax advice?
No to both. The tax falls due on service of the assessment, and an objection leaves the due date as it is (Art. 113 Abs. 2 and 5 SteG); it is payable within 30 days of falling due, subject to payment relief allowed, and default interest is owed otherwise (Art. 114 Abs. 1 and 3 SteG). The template is not tax advice, which as a business falls under the Treuhänder Act (Art. 2 Bst. d TrHG).
