Yearly rent review letter by the IRL index (France)
For a landlord whose lease in France provides for a yearly rent review. The French letter applies the rent reference index (IRL) published by INSEE: current rent, old and new index for the same quarter, new rent and start date, with the one-year rule of art. 17-1 and the ban on reviewing the rent of a home rated F or G. Best sent by registered letter with proof of receipt, to keep the date of the request.
Subscription cancellation letter: loi Chatel or legitimate reason (France)
For a subscriber to a gym, magazine, streaming service or club in France who wants to stop. As you choose: cancellation at the end of the term with the contract's notice; free cancellation at any time when the business did not remind you, one to three months before the end of the term, of your right not to renew (the loi Chatel, Article L. 215-1 of the French Consumer Code); or cancellation for a legitimate reason the contract provides for. For a subscription taken out online, the 'cancel' button is often quicker. In French, to send by registered post with proof of receipt.
Withdrawal of a signed final-settlement receipt (France)
A letter for a former employee in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte who wants to denounce the final-settlement receipt (reçu pour solde de tout compte) signed at the end of the contract. Sent within six months of signing, it stops the receipt from discharging the employer from the amounts listed in it (article L. 1234-20 of the Labour Code), and can name the amounts disputed. The withdrawal goes by registered post (article D. 1234-8 of the Labour Code) and the six months run from signing: use proof of receipt and send it early enough to arrive in time. In French.
Revoking a SEPA direct-debit mandate and blocking debits (France)
For stopping a creditor's direct debits from your account in France: a subscription, a supplier, a lender. The document, in French under French law, holds two letters to send the same day: the revocation of the SEPA mandate, to the creditor, and the opposition, to your bank, which then refuses every debit from that creditor (article L. 133-7 of the French Monetary and Financial Code). A debit presented afterwards is no longer authorised and is refunded. Revoking the mandate does not end the contract.
Disputing a time-barred consumer debt (France)
For a consumer in France from whom a business or a collection agency claims an old bill: energy, a subscription, building work, a purchase. A business's claim against a consumer is time-barred after two years (article L. 218-2 of the French Consumer Code). The letter, in French under French law, pleads the limitation period, states that it does not acknowledge the debt and asks for collection to stop and the file to be closed. Pay nothing before sending it. Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.
Resignation letter (France)
The French labour ministry's site code.travail.gouv.fr offers a free model resignation letter. This document is a resignation letter for an employee on an open-ended contract (CDI) in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte: it gives notice of resignation, refers to the notice period set by the collective agreement, the contract or custom, can ask to be released from working it, and asks for the end-of-employment documents. French law prescribes no form; send it by registered post with proof of receipt or hand it over against a signed receipt, to prove the day the notice starts. In French.
Insurance cancellation letter: home, car, health, loan cover (France)
For a private policyholder in France who wants to leave an insurer or mutual insurer. After a year, car insurance and a tenant's home insurance are cancelled by the new insurer, and a policy taken out online can also be cancelled online. This letter offers, as you choose: cancellation at any time, after a year, of another policy, such as supplementary health cover, effective one month after receipt (Article L. 113-15-2 of the French Insurance Code; Article L. 221-10-2 of the Mutual Insurance Code); cancellation at the annual renewal date; or cancellation of loan insurance at any time, with the lender's approval of the new policy (loi Lemoine). In French.
Letter opting to pay VAT, giving up the VAT exemption (France)
For a sole trader or company under the French VAT exemption scheme (franchise en base) who wants to give it up, charge VAT and recover VAT on purchases (article 293 F of the French General Tax Code). The option can be declared free through the secure messaging of your professional space on impots.gouv.fr. This French letter to the business tax office (SIE) is for sending it by post or reusing its wording: effect from the first day of the month, two-year commitment, request for a VAT number. Registered post with proof of receipt is advised.
Revocation of a power of attorney, with notice to third parties (France)
For ending a power of attorney, general or for one act, given to a relative or anyone else. The French document holds two letters, sent the same day by registered post with proof of receipt: the revocation to the agent, asking for the original back and an account of what was done (articles 1993 and 2004 of the French Civil Code), and the notice to the bank or body that knows of the power. Without that second letter, third parties unaware of the revocation may still rely on the power (article 2005).
Withdrawal of the VAT option and return to the exemption (France)
For a business that had opted to pay VAT and wants to return to the VAT exemption scheme (franchise en base), its turnover staying below the thresholds. The withdrawal is made at the end of the two-year period (article 293 F of the French General Tax Code), free through the secure messaging of the professional space or by this French letter to the business tax office. Ceasing business altogether is declared free on the one-stop business formalities portal. Registered post with proof of receipt is advised.
Formal demand for payment before court action (France)
For a private person in France who is owed money — an unrepaid loan, an unpaid invoice or rent, a promised sum — before going to court. The letter, in French under French law, states where the debt comes from and how much it is, sets a payment deadline, starts interest at the legal rate (article 1344-1 of the French Civil Code) and proposes an amicable solution or a free conciliateur de justice, a step required before suing for claims up to €5,000. Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.
Reminder and formal demand for unpaid rent (France)
For a landlord in France whose tenant owes rent or charges. The French letter lists the months owed and the total, sets a payment date, offers a payment plan and the free help available (ADIL, CAF, the housing solidarity fund), then states the next step: a formal demand for payment served by a commissaire de justice, then the lease's termination clause, six weeks after an unanswered demand, or two months where a lease signed before July 2023 says so. A first friendly reminder or a formal demand, as you choose. A copy can go to the guarantor.
Note justifying a pupil's absence from school (France)
For a parent who must justify a child's absence from a French school, collège or lycée: a dated, signed note giving the pupil, class, dates and half-days missed, and the reason, chosen from those article L. 131-8 of the French Education Code recognises, with no health detail at all. The home-school notebook, the school's own slip or the ENT remain the usual free route; this template is for when they are not at hand or for an absence of several days. In French, handed to the school without delay.
Paternity leave notice (France)
A letter by which the employed father, or the mother's employed spouse, civil partner (PACS) or cohabiting partner, tells the employer the expected date of birth and the dates of paternity and childcare leave (congé de paternité et d'accueil de l'enfant, article L. 1225-35 of the French Labour Code) in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte: four compulsory days after the birth leave, then twenty-one days (twenty-eight for multiple births) in one or two periods within six months. Send it at least one month ahead, by registered post with proof of receipt or against a receipt. In French.
Letter sending a sick note to the employer (France)
For an employee on sick leave in mainland France or the overseas departments other than Mayotte: the letter that goes with part 3 of the French sick note (avis d’arrêt de travail), the part meant for the employer. In French under French law, it says whether this is a first note or an extension, gives its dates and asks the employer to send the pay details to the health insurer. The note itself is the secured form the doctor completes. Sold blank, to complete by hand, as it holds health data DocMuse does not collect.
Formal demand for payment of a business invoice (France)
For requiring a business client in France to pay one or more overdue invoices after a reminder had no effect: invoices concerned, principal amount, time to pay, reminder of the late-payment penalties running since the due date and of the flat €40 indemnity per invoice (articles L. 441-10 and D. 441-5 of the French Commercial Code), notice of recovery proceedings. Sent by registered post with proof of receipt, or by qualified electronic registered letter to the business client. In French.
Formal demand to pay or perform an obligation (France)
For a private person in France waiting for a business or another person to pay, deliver, finish work or perform any other obligation: you set a deadline and put the debtor on formal notice (mise en demeure) under Article 1344 of the French Civil Code. For a sum of money, the formal notice starts interest at the statutory rate (Article 1344-1). It is the written step before mediation, conciliation or court. In French, to send by registered post with proof of receipt, or to have served by a commissaire de justice.
Motor insurance claim notice (France)
For notifying your own insurer of an accident, theft, fire, broken glass, vandalism or a weather event affecting your vehicle in France. The policy sets the time limit and how to notify, often online or by phone at no cost; the law does not allow less than five working days, or two for theft (article L. 113-2 of the French Insurance Code). The letter gives the policy, the facts, the damage, the other people involved and the enclosures. Sent by registered post with proof of receipt. In French.
Notice of parental leave or the additional birth leave (France)
A letter for an employed parent in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte, telling the employer that they are taking parental leave (congé parental d'éducation), full-time or as part-time work (articles L. 1225-47 and L. 1225-50 of the French Labour Code), or the additional birth leave available since 1 July 2026 (congé supplémentaire de naissance, articles L. 1225-46-2 et seq.; decree no. 2026-419 of 30 May 2026). These leaves are a right once the conditions are met: the letter sets the dates, and the law calls for registered post with proof of receipt or hand delivery against a receipt. In French.

For closing a current account or a savings account at a French bank. If you are moving to another bank, its free account-switching service (aide à la mobilité bancaire) can do it for you. It goes by e-mail or ordinary letter; if it has no effect, the formal demand for payment, sent by registered post, is the next step. In French.

For a tenant leaving a home in France, unfurnished or furnished. The French letter gives notice with the right period — three months, one month in a zone tendue or for a reason in art. 15, one month for a furnished home — states the reason for the shorter notice and its proof, the moving-out date, proposes the check-out inspection and asks for the deposit back at the new address.
