The registry certificate can also be downloaded free from ANPR, and municipalities publish free self-declaration forms. No stamp duty is due (art. 37). Common questions
- Where can Italian residence and family-status certificates be had free?
- On the Interior Ministry’s ANPR portal, with SPID, CIE or CNS: registry certificates download free, and since 31 March 2026 civil-status certificates too in the municipalities that have joined. Municipalities also publish free self-declaration forms. This document puts residence, citizenship, civil status and household on one sheet, to fill in once and sign.
- Who must accept an Italian self-declaration?
- Public bodies and public-service operators, which may no longer ask for certificates for facts the citizen can declare. Since 15 September 2020 private parties too, such as banks, insurers and landlords, must accept it (art. 2 of Presidential Decree 445/2000, as amended by decree-law 76/2020). In the province of Bolzano public offices must also accept it in German, and in the Aosta Valley in French.
- What does someone risk by making a false self-declaration in Italy?
- A false declaration is punished under the criminal code and special laws (art. 76 of Presidential Decree 445/2000), and anyone who obtained a benefit through an untrue declaration loses it (art. 75). Public bodies check declarations, including by sampling. Fill in only the lines you need: lines left empty do not appear in the completed document.
