The general document for when an institution has refused something and you believe the refusal rests on incomplete or mistaken information. - No. That is the most important thing about this document — an application for reconsideration does not replace an appeal and does not extend the time limits for one. If there is a deadline to appeal, watch it separately and lodge an appeal if it is approaching.
- When is it worth filing instead of an appeal?
- Where the refusal rests on incomplete or mistaken information that you can supply. If the dispute is about interpretation rather than facts, reconsideration rarely produces a different outcome and an appeal is more use.
- What documents should I attach?
- Exactly what was missing or wrong the first time. An application that repeats the same arguments with no new document gives the authority grounds to answer with the same decision.
- Who is it addressed to?
- The authority that issued the decision, unless the decision itself states another route. An application sent to a higher authority in place of an appeal is usually forwarded on and loses time.
