Claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, or denied boarding (UK)
Why it matches: The airline cancelled your flight at the last minute and refuses to pay.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for consumers
For a passenger whose flight arrived three hours or more late, was cancelled at short notice, or who was denied boarding, on a flight covered by UK261 (Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 as it forms part of UK law): every flight from a UK airport, and flights to the UK on a UK airline or, from outside the EU, on an EU airline. The letter claims the fixed compensation in pounds — £220, £350 or £520 per passenger, by distance — from the airline that operated the flight, unless extraordinary circumstances caused the problem. Send it by email or the airline's claim form, and by first class post.
Notice cancelling an online, phone or doorstep purchase within 14 days (UK)
Why it matches: You signed up for a service over the phone and want to cancel within the cooling-off period.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for consumers
For a consumer who bought goods or a service online, by phone or away from the trader's premises and has changed their mind. The notice cancels the contract within the 14-day cancellation period of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, with no reason needed, and asks for a refund within 14 days. The model cancellation form the trader must give you, or its own online form, does the same job free. Send it by email and by first class post with a free certificate of posting, and keep a copy.
Letter telling a company you have cancelled a Direct Debit or standing order (UK)
Why it matches: You cancelled the Direct Debit to a gym in the UK and need to tell the company.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for consumers
For a customer who has cancelled a Direct Debit or standing order with their bank — usually in online banking, free and at once — and needs to tell the company it paid. Cancelling the payment does not end a contract or a debt, so the letter states your position: the contract has ended, you will pay another way, or you dispute the charges. Under the Direct Debit Guarantee, your bank refunds at once any payment taken in error. Send it by email and by first class post.
Complaint about a package holiday that was not as booked (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English · for consumers
For a traveller in Northern Ireland whose package holiday — flights and hotel, or other travel services sold together — was not as booked: a different or poor hotel, missing services, a changed itinerary. Under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 the organiser is responsible for every part of the package and owes a price reduction and compensation for what went wrong. The letter claims them and is your final letter before a small claim in the county court, with 14 days to reply. Send it to the organiser by email and by recorded delivery (Royal Mail Signed For).
Representations against a parking Notice to Owner (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: You want to make formal representations so the penalty charge is cancelled.
Northern Ireland · in English
For the registered keeper of a vehicle in Northern Ireland who has received a Notice to Owner for a parking penalty charge from the Department for Infrastructure or a council and wants it cancelled. The letter makes formal representations on a ground printed on the notice — for example that the contravention did not occur, or that the vehicle had been taken without consent — with the facts and the evidence. Send it within the time the notice gives; if it is rejected, the Northern Ireland Traffic Penalty Tribunal hears a free appeal.
Letter telling a bank or organisation that a power of attorney has been revoked (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: You have cancelled a power of attorney and need your bank in Northern Ireland to stop taking instructions.
Northern Ireland · in English
For someone in Northern Ireland who has revoked a power of attorney given under the Powers of Attorney Act (Northern Ireland) 1971: a letter to a bank, building society, utility, landlord or any organisation the attorney has dealt with, saying the power has ended, asking it to stop taking the attorney’s instructions and to confirm this in writing. It encloses a copy of the deed of revocation and goes by Royal Mail Signed For or by hand.
Challenge to a parking penalty charge notice (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English
For the driver or keeper of a vehicle given a penalty charge notice (PCN) for parking in Northern Ireland — on the street by the Department for Infrastructure, or in a council car park — who thinks it is wrong and has not yet received a Notice to Owner. The letter gives the ticket’s details, the reasons it should be cancelled and the evidence, and asks for any reduced charge to be held open. The online challenge route printed on the ticket does the same job; this letter suits post or email. Not for private car park charges.
Notice to cancel a gym membership or subscription (UK)
Why it matches: You want to cancel your gym membership in the UK.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for consumers
For a member who wants to end a gym membership, a club or a paid subscription. The notice ends the contract on the basis you choose — its own notice terms, the end of the minimum term, or the 14-day cancellation right for a contract made online or by phone — and asks the provider to take no payment after the last one due. The subscription rules of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 are not yet in force. Send it by the channel the contract names, or by email and first class post.
Directors' resolution to close a company by voluntary strike-off (UK)
Why it matches: Your company in the UK has stopped trading and the directors want to close it by striking it off.
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English
For the directors of a solvent private limited company in the UK that has stopped trading and is to be closed. The written resolution records that the company meets the conditions of the Companies Act 2006 for voluntary strike-off, authorises the application on form DS01 (£13 online) and the copies that must go within seven days to its members, employees, creditors, any director who did not sign and pension trustees. A company that cannot pay its debts is closed through an insolvency practitioner instead.
Notice terminating a business contract (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: You want a clear termination letter that names the clause and the end date.
Northern Ireland · in English
For a business in Northern Ireland ending a contract with a supplier, customer or other business, either on the notice the contract allows or because the other side has seriously broken it. The letter identifies the contract and the clause relied on, gives the end date, describes any breach, and records that payments due and surviving terms continue. Follow the contract’s notices clause on address, method and timing, and keep proof of delivery. Ending a contract for a breach that is not serious enough can itself be a breach, so take advice if unsure.
Request for unpaid leave by agreement with your employer (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: Your paid holiday has run out and you need more time for a family matter.
Northern Ireland · in English · for employees
For an employee in Northern Ireland who needs time off beyond their holiday — a long trip, a family matter, study — and wants their employer's agreement: a letter asking for unpaid leave between two dates, with the return date, and asking the employer to confirm in writing your return to the same job and what happens to holiday, pension and benefits. There is no general right to unpaid leave; parental leave and time off for dependants are separate statutory rights. Hand it in and email it.
Notice to a lodger to leave your home (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: Your lodger keeps breaking the house rules and you want to end the arrangement in writing.
Northern Ireland · in English · for landlords
For a homeowner or tenant in Northern Ireland who lives in the home and wants a lodger to leave. The notice refers to your lodger agreement, gives the date it ends — at least four weeks ahead in writing (eight weeks once the lodger has lived with you for more than a year), or the longer period the agreement sets — asks for the room to be cleared and the keys returned, and says what happens to the deposit. Hand it over in person and keep a copy the lodger has signed. Not for a tenant who has the home or part of it to themselves: a landlord’s notice to quit is a different document.
Landlord’s letter to a tenant about rent arrears (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: You want to warn your tenant in writing before thinking about ending the tenancy.
Northern Ireland · in English · for landlords
For a private landlord or letting agent in Northern Ireland whose tenant has fallen behind with the rent. The letter sets out the arrears period by period, asks the tenant to pay or propose a repayment plan by a set date, points to free advice from Housing Rights, Advice NI and others, and carries the landlord registration number. It says that if the arrears are not resolved the landlord may end the tenancy by notice to quit, as the law and the tenancy allow, and then apply to the court. It never threatens to change the locks or remove belongings.
Appeal against a refused school place (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: Your child is leaving primary school in Northern Ireland and did not get a place at any of the post-primary schools you chose.
Northern Ireland · in English · for parents
For a parent in Northern Ireland whose child has been refused a place at a primary or post-primary school they applied for. An appeal against the Board of Governors' decision to the independent admissions appeal tribunal the Education Authority sets up: it names the decision and sets out why the school's published admissions criteria were not applied, or not applied correctly — the question the tribunal decides. Lodge it by the deadline in the Education Authority's letter, through EA Connect, on its paper form or as this letter, posted first class with the decision letter.
Complaint about poor work by a builder, garage or other trader (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: A builder in Northern Ireland left your extension unfinished and badly done.
Northern Ireland · in English · for consumers
For a consumer in Northern Ireland whose builder, decorator, garage, repairer or other service provider did the work badly or not as agreed. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a trader must perform a service with reasonable care and skill; the letter asks for the work to be put right at the trader's cost or, where that is not possible, for a price reduction (sections 49, 55 and 56), and is your final letter before a small claim in the county court, with 14 days to reply. Send it by email and by recorded delivery (Royal Mail Signed For), with photos.
Flexible working request to your employer (Northern Ireland)
Why it matches: Caring for a relative means you need to start and finish work earlier.
Northern Ireland · in English · for employees
For an employee in Northern Ireland with 26 weeks' service who wants to change their hours, days or place of work — part-time, compressed hours, home or hybrid working: a dated written application under Article 112F of the Employment Rights (Northern Ireland) Order 1996, giving your present pattern, the change, when it should start and its likely effect on the business, and saying you have made no other request in the last 12 months. The employer must meet you within 28 days. Hand it in and email it.
Letter asking your bank to close your account (UK)
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for consumers

Under regulation 51 of the Payment Services Regulations 2017 you can end a current account at any time, subject to a notice period of up to one month if your terms set one, and closing is free once the account has been open for six months. The letter asks the bank to close the account, cancel cards and payments, pay the remaining balance to another account and confirm the closure in writing. Most banks also close accounts free in the app, by phone or in a branch.
Maternity leave notice to your employer (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English · for employees
For a pregnant employee in Northern Ireland: the written notice of your pregnancy, the expected week of childbirth, the date you want your maternity leave to start and the date for Statutory Maternity Pay, given by the end of the 15th week before the expected week, with your MAT B1 certificate enclosed or to follow. It asks your employer to confirm in writing, within 28 days, when your leave ends and what you will be paid. nidirect explains maternity pay and leave free. Hand it in and email it.
Tenant’s notice to quit a private tenancy (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English · for tenants
For a private tenant in Northern Ireland who wants to move out of a periodic tenancy, including one that has rolled on after a fixed term. A tenant ends it by notice to quit in writing: at least four weeks if the tenancy has lasted ten years or less, twelve weeks if longer (Article 14A of the Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2006). The notice gives your end date with a saving clause, can ask the landlord to agree an earlier date, asks for a check-out and the deposit, and gives your new address. Send it by recorded delivery, or hand it over.
Request to the Education Authority for a statutory assessment of special educational needs (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English · for parents
For a parent in Northern Ireland who believes their child has, or may have, special educational needs the school cannot meet from its own resources. A request to the Education Authority for a statutory assessment, the step towards a statement of special educational needs: it sets out your reasons and evidence, asks for the decision within the time limits that apply, and asks for reasons and your appeal rights if the Authority refuses. Posted first class; the Education Authority also has a free online form. Sold blank, as it holds a child's health data.
Complaint about an order that never arrived (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English · for consumers
For a consumer in Northern Ireland whose order from an online or high-street trader has not arrived. Under section 28 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the trader must deliver within the agreed time or, if none was agreed, within 30 days, and the goods stay at its risk until you have them (section 29), so a parcel lost in transit is its problem. The letter gives a final 14 days to deliver, after which the contract ends, a full refund is due and you may make a small claim for it in the county court. Send it by email and by recorded delivery (Royal Mail Signed For).
Complaint about health and social care (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland · in English
For a patient or service user in Northern Ireland, or someone complaining with their consent, unhappy with care from a GP practice, a dentist, a hospital or another health and social care service. A formal complaint to the trust or practice under the complaints procedure every HSC organisation has followed since 1 January 2026: it says what happened and what you want done, asks for an answer within the procedure's time limits and names the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman as the next step. The Patient and Client Council helps free. Sent by email. Sold blank, as it holds health data.
Letter to DVLA after selling a vehicle still registered to me (UK)
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales · in English · for sellers
For a former keeper in the UK who sold or passed on a vehicle but is still shown on DVLA's record and is getting reminders, a late licensing penalty or fines for it. If you still have the log book (V5C), tell DVLA first with GOV.UK's free online service, which updates the record at once. The letter is for what that cannot fix: it gives the date and time of the sale and the new keeper's details, says how DVLA was told, and asks DVLA to correct its record and stop action for the time after the sale. Sent first class to the address on DVLA's letter.
