Common questions
- What must a small-amount invoice up to €400 in Austria contain?
- Under § 11 Abs 6 UStG this is enough: the supplier's name and address, the quantity and usual trade description of the goods or the type and extent of the service, the date or period of supply, the price and tax as one total, the tax rate and the date of issue. The customer's name and address, a sequential number and the UID number are not required.
- Is Austria's €400 limit for small-amount invoices gross or net?
- Gross: the total including VAT must not exceed €400. Above it the invoice needs every particular of § 11 Abs 1 UStG, including the customer's name and address, a sequential number, the price and tax shown separately and your UID number, and above €10,000 gross the customer's too. Since 2025 small businesses (Kleinunternehmer) may also use a simplified invoice above €400, but without VAT.
- How long are small-amount invoices kept in Austria, and do they need the company-register details?
- Seven years, like all records, both those issued and those received (§ 132 BAO). No signature is required. If the business is entered in the Austrian company register (Firmenbuch), even a small invoice carries its legal form, seat, register number and register court (§ 14 UGB); this document has its own line for them. Sole traders who are not registered leave it empty.

Since 1 January 2025 the exemption applies up to €55,000 gross annual turnover, with a 10 % tolerance in the current year, and small businesses may use the simplified invoice above €400 too.
