The PDF you download is in German — that is the language it has to be filed in, so it is not translated. Everything on this page is here to tell you what it says.
The written notice surrendering a trade licence (Gewerbeberechtigung) to the trade authority — the Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat where the business is located — under § 86 of the Austrian Trade Regulation Act (GewO 1994): with the GISA number, the wording of the trade, the location and the day it is to take effect. It takes effect when it arrives, unless a later day is named, and cannot be withdrawn from then on. It can also be done online through GISA with ID Austria, and some district authorities offer their own form; this letter is the informal route by post, in person or by e-mail. In German.

Common questions
- Is a form needed to surrender a trade licence in Austria?
- No. The surrender is a notice to the trade authority: online through GISA (log-in with ID Austria), on the form some district authorities offer, or informally with this letter. As a submission to an administrative authority it may be sent by post, handed in or e-mailed, unless the authority has published a restriction (§ 13 AVG). No fee is charged. Enclose a copy of an official photo ID; the letter lists it as an enclosure.
- When does surrendering a trade licence take effect in Austria, and can it be withdrawn?
- On the day the notice reaches the authority, or on the later day you name; from its arrival it can no longer be withdrawn (§ 86 Abs 1 and 2 GewO 1994). It covers the main location and every further establishment. To trade again later, the trade has to be registered anew. For a temporary pause, a dormancy notice (Ruhendmeldung) to the Chamber of Commerce is the alternative.
- Who else must be told in Austria besides the trade authority?
- The Finanzamt Österreich: the closure must be reported to it within one month (§§ 120, 121 BAO) — through FinanzOnline, by post or fax, not by e-mail, which the tax office does not treat as a submission at all. The self-employed persons' insurer (SVS) hears of the surrender from the trade authority. Any employees must be deregistered with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK).
