The letter cancelling your motor liability insurance in Austria in the four most common cases: at the end of the insurance year (§ 14 Abs 2 of the Austrian Motor Liability Insurance Act, KHVG) — the anniversary of the policy's start, not necessarily 31 December, with the notice arriving a month before — after a premium increase (§ 14a KHVG), after a claim (§ 158 VersVG), and after buying a used car whose insurance passed with it (§§ 69 ff VersVG). With the policy number and plate. In German, ready to print, sign and send by registered post.

Common questions
- By when must motor liability insurance be cancelled in Austria?
- For an ordinary cancellation at the end of the insurance year, the written notice must reach the insurer at least one month before that end (§ 14 Abs 2 KHVG). The insurance year starts on the day the policy began, as stated on the policy, so it does not necessarily end on 31 December. Enter that day in the letter. Send the notice early enough to arrive in time.
- When can motor liability insurance be cancelled in Austria outside the insurance year?
- Mainly in three cases: after a premium increase, within one month of being notified of it (§ 14a KHVG); after a claim, within one month of the insurer accepting or refusing to pay (§ 158 VersVG); and after buying an insured used car, within one month of the purchase (§ 70 Abs 2 VersVG). Choose the case in the letter and enter the relevant date.
- Is an e-mail enough to cancel motor insurance in Austria?
- Check first. The law requires written notice (§ 14 Abs 2 KHVG). Some insurers accept a plain e-mail under their terms; whether yours does is stated in the policy terms or the product information sheet. A letter signed by hand and sent by registered post, or a PDF signed with a qualified electronic signature through ID Austria (§ 4 Abs 1 SVG), is safe. A car must not be used without liability insurance.
