A model text and instructions for a handwritten will in Bulgaria, to copy out entirely by hand. A printed or typed sheet is not a will: a handwritten will must be written wholly in the testator's hand, state the date it was made and be signed after the dispositions (Art. 25(1) of the Bulgarian Succession Act). So the document has no signature box and cannot be signed electronically. The instructions explain the heirs' reserved share and how to hand the will to a notary for safekeeping in a sealed envelope. Common questions
- Is a will typed on a computer and signed by hand valid in Bulgaria?
- No. A handwritten will must be written wholly in the testator's hand, contain the date and be signed after the dispositions (Art. 25(1) of the Bulgarian Succession Act). A printed text signed by hand is not a handwritten will, and an electronic signature does not make it one. That is why this is a model to copy, not a form to fill in and sign. If you do not want to write by hand, there is the notarial will (Art. 24).
- Do I have to take a handwritten will to a notary in Bulgaria?
- No, it is optional. You may keep it yourself or give it to someone you trust. You may also hand it to a notary for safekeeping in a sealed envelope; the notary draws up a record entered in a special register (Art. 25(2) of the Bulgarian Succession Act). After your death, whoever holds the will must ask a notary at once to announce it (Art. 27).
- Can I leave everything to one person by will in Bulgaria if I have children?
- You may leave your estate to whomever you choose, but the law reserves a share for descendants (children and their heirs), parents and the surviving spouse (Art. 28 and 29 of the Bulgarian Succession Act). A will that infringes that reserved share can be reduced to it at an heir's claim (Art. 30). Describe clearly who receives what, to avoid disputes between the heirs.

- Agreement for a divorce by mutual consent under Art. 51 of the Family Code (Bulgaria)
The agreement spouses in Bulgaria file with the district court together with their petition for divorce by mutual consent (Art. 50 and 51 of the Bulgarian Family Code). It settles what the law requires — where the children live, parental rights, contact and child maintenance, the use of the family home, maintenance between the spouses and surnames — and, if you wish, property. The court decides: the divorce is granted and the agreement approved only by a judgment of the district court, after it checks that the children's interests are protected. Both spouses appear in person. In Bulgarian.
- Annex to a contract (Bulgaria)
The general annex — it works for any contract in the catalogue. Amending a signed contract has to be done in writing, in the same form as the contract itself, and it must say which clauses change, with what wording, and from which date. An annex that states only what is new, without naming the clauses it replaces, is a common source of argument about what is actually in force.
- Declaration under Art. 313 of the Criminal Code (Bulgaria)
The all-purpose declaration that institutions and employers ask for most often. You fill in your details and the wording of what you are declaring; the clause on criminal liability for a false declaration is already in the text.
- Consent for a child to travel abroad (Bulgaria)
When a child leaves the country with only one parent or with another adult, border control asks for the other parent's written consent. The declaration names the countries, the period and the accompanying adult by name. The signature has to be notarised — without that the document is of no use at the border. We prepare the wording; the notarisation is done at a notary.
- Declaration of family and financial circumstances (Bulgaria)
Asked for when applying for social assistance, legal aid, a grant, a reduced fee or municipal housing. Many institutions have a form of their own — if there is one, use it; this document is for when there is not, or when you want to prepare the figures in advance. It is declared under liability, so set out your income in full.
- Contract of mandate (Bulgaria)
For when you instruct someone to act on your behalf — to represent you before an institution, to manage a property, to negotiate, to receive payments. It differs from a contract for work and from a service agreement in that the agent acts for your account and owes you an account of it. The contract settles the scope, the reporting and the expenses; for acting towards third parties a separate power of attorney is also needed.
