A model will to copy out in your own hand, with instructions. A printout of this model is not a will: a handwritten will is valid in Poland only if the testator writes it entirely by hand, signs and dates it (art. 949 § 1 of the Polish Civil Code). It contains a model text — revoking earlier wills, appointing heirs, a legacy and an executor — and guidance on the reserved share (zachowek), on what a handwritten will cannot contain, and on depositing it with a notary and entering it in the Notarial Register of Wills (NORT). The other route is a will made before a notary.

Common questions

Is a will typed on a computer and signed by hand valid in Poland?
No. A handwritten will is valid only if the testator writes it entirely by hand, signs and dates it (art. 949 § 1 of the Polish Civil Code). A printout of this model, a computer text signed in pen, or a scan of either, is not a will and has no effect. Copy the model out in full in your own hand on paper, sign it below the text and write the date.
How is a handwritten will entered in Poland's Notarial Register of Wills?
Registration is not compulsory. A handwritten will goes into the Notarial Register of Wills (NORT), kept by the National Council of Notaries, only if the testator hands it to a notary for safekeeping and asks for the entry. The register holds not the will's content but only which notary keeps it; after the death a notary gives that information on sight of the death certificate. The notary charges for accepting and keeping the document under the notarial fee scale.
Who can claim the reserved share when a handwritten will leaves family out in Poland?
The testator's descendants, spouse and parents who would inherit under the statute. They are owed half the value of the share they would have received on intestacy, or two thirds if they are permanently unable to work or are minor descendants (art. 991 § 1 of the Polish Civil Code). The reserved share (zachowek) is a claim for money against the heir, not a share in the estate. It can be removed only by disinheritance on the grounds of art. 1008, stated in the will (art. 1009).
What happens to a handwritten will after the testator dies in Poland?
Whoever holds the will files it with the probate court on learning of the death, unless they have deposited it with a notary (art. 646 § 1 of the Polish Code of Civil Procedure); anyone who fails to do so without good reason is liable for the damage, and the court may fine them. The will is opened and announced, and the heirs obtain a court order confirming the acquisition of the estate or a notarial certificate of inheritance.

  • General power of attorney (pełnomocnictwo ogólne) (Poland)

A Polish power of attorney for acts of ordinary management — running the principal's day-to-day affairs and property: paying bills, collecting post, managing a let flat, dealing with offices. It must be in writing on pain of nullity (art. 99 § 2 of the Civil Code). The document also states what it does not cover — selling property, loans, gifts — since those need a power of attorney naming the type of act or the act itself.

  • Special power of attorney for a specific act (pełnomocnictwo szczególne) (Poland)

A Polish power of attorney for an act beyond ordinary management — selling a car, signing a particular contract, collecting money, handling a specific matter — setting out the act, its limits, how long it lasts, and whether the agent may appoint a substitute or contract with themselves. Where the act needs a special form, the power of attorney needs the same one — selling real estate requires a notarial deed, as the document warns.

  • Cohabitation agreement for unmarried partners (Poland)

An agreement for couples living together in Poland without marrying: how they share housing and living costs, what each keeps as personal property, how things bought together are co-owned, how they settle up if they separate, and who leaves the home. Poland has no registered partnerships — the closest-person status law did not take effect after the Sejm failed to override the presidential veto in September 2026 — so these matters are settled by a civil-law contract.

  • Revocation of a power of attorney (odwołanie pełnomocnictwa) (Poland)

A principal's statement revoking a Polish power of attorney, saying when it was given and what it covered, demanding the document back (art. 102 of the Civil Code) and listing the people and institutions told of the revocation. It takes effect when it reaches the agent, but an act done with someone unaware of the revocation can still stand — so the bank, the office and business partners should be told too.

  • Parenting agreement for a divorce or separation case (Poland)

A written agreement between parents who are divorcing or separating in Poland on how they will exercise parental authority and on the children's contact: where the children live, what the parents decide together, regular contact times, school holidays, public holidays, pick-up, phone contact and a proposal for child maintenance. The court takes such an agreement into account if it is in the child's best interests (art. 58 § 1 of the Polish Family and Guardianship Code), but it decides the divorce, parental authority, contact and maintenance itself in its judgment. Both parents sign it and file it with the regional court with the divorce petition or during the case.

  • Freedom of information request (wniosek o udostępnienie informacji publicznej) (Poland)

A request under Poland's Access to Public Information Act of 6 September 2001, to an office, municipality, school, municipal company or other body performing public tasks: the information sought, the form and way it should be provided, and a reminder of the 14-day deadline and that no legal or factual interest need be shown. No answer in time opens the way to a complaint about inaction to the regional administrative court.
