Where does the application go if the school no longer exists?

To the body that took over the closed school's records — usually the local authority that ran the school, its archive, or the regional education office (kuratorium), which issues duplicates for schools whose records it holds. The municipal or county office or the kuratorium can say where the archive went. The application is made the same way as at a school, with proof of the fee.

What does a duplicate school certificate cost, and how long does it take?

The fee is 26 zł — the same as the stamp duty for legalising a document — usually paid into the account of the school or the body issuing the duplicate. Schools most often issue it within a few days to two weeks, longer if the details must be found in the archive. The duplicate is made on the current form and marked as a duplicate.

Does a duplicate certificate have the same force as the original?

Yes — a duplicate has the force of the original and can be used wherever the original could, for university admission or a job, for example. For use abroad, it can additionally be legalised or given an apostille. If the original turns up after the duplicate is issued, it stays valid too, so it is worth keeping both.
