Where a diploma is lost, destroyed or damaged, a duplicate is issued from the register held by the school or university. The application identifies exactly which diploma is wanted — year of completion, course, registration number if known — because the issuer searches an archive rather than a name. A fee is usually payable and a declaration of the circumstances required.

Common questions

The school no longer exists. Where do I get a duplicate?
From the institution that took over the archive — usually the regional education authority or the state archive. A duplicate is issued from the register, so the question is who holds the register, not who was the head teacher.
Does a duplicate look like the original?
It is issued on the current form and is marked as a duplicate, with the particulars from the register. It has the same evidential force, but it is not a copy of the old sheet and does not look like one.
What do I do if I cannot remember the registration number?
Leave the field empty and fill in the year of completion and the course — the archive is searched on those. The number speeds the search up but is not required in order to file.
How long does it take?
It depends where the archive is held; for older cohorts the search takes longer. If you have an application deadline, file as early as you can rather than in the week before it.
