DocMuse is a private, paid service run by The Muse Technology EOOD (Bulgaria). It is not a UK government website and is not connected with GOV.UK, HM Courts & Tribunals Service or any other public body. It is not a law firm and is not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or any other legal regulator, so the Legal Ombudsman cannot consider complaints about it; its documents are not legal advice.

Family, powers of attorney and personal documents in England

Taking a child under 16 out of the UK needs the consent of everyone with parental responsibility, and there is no official form: a signed letter of consent for a child to travel abroad is the usual proof. A parent can also arrange for a grandparent or childminder to consent to a child’s medical treatment. Anyone aged 16 or over can change their name with an unenrolled change of name deed, signed before two adult witnesses; GOV.UK explains the free route and the optional enrolment.

A general power of attorney under the Powers of Attorney Act 1971 is a deed signed before a witness, and it stops working if you lose mental capacity. For that, the Office of the Public Guardian’s own online service makes a lasting power of attorney, registered for £92. A power can be ended by a deed of revocation, and a letter of authority lets someone talk to a bank or supplier for you.

There is no common-law marriage, so couples who live together use a cohabitation agreement, each taking independent advice. Councils answer complaints first; the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman looks at them free afterwards (complaint to the council). Public bodies answer a freedom of information request within 20 working days. DocMuse is a private, paid service, not a government website, and gives no legal advice.
