Money, debt and banking in England: loans, debt letters and bank complaints

Lending to family or friends needs no registration or stamp duty, but a signed loan agreement records the amount, any interest and the repayment date. A simple contract debt is barred six years after it fell due, and a signed acknowledgement of a debt or a payment starts that period again; a debt already barred stays barred. If a private person will not pay, a letter before claim gives 14 days before a claim through Money Claim Online, and a settlement agreement records a deal that ends the dispute.

Chased for an old or unfamiliar debt? A reply to a debt collector asks for proof or states that the debt is statute-barred, and a request for a copy of your credit agreement under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 costs £1. Banks answer complaints within eight weeks, or 15 business days for payment services, and then the Financial Ombudsman Service decides for free; a scam refund claim covers bank transfer fraud up to £85,000 if made within 13 months.

Free, independent debt advice is available from MoneyHelper, National Debtline, StepChange and Citizens Advice, and debt relief orders, bankruptcy and Breathing Space go through them or GOV.UK, not through a letter. These documents follow the law of England and Wales as at 28 October 2026; DocMuse is a private service, not a public body, and does not send or file anything for you.
