Common questions

Which details must a French invoice carry since 1 September 2026?
The usual ones: unique sequential number, date, the seller's identity, address and SIREN, VAT number if any, the client's identity and address, date of delivery or service, details, price before VAT, VAT rate and amount, total, due date and, between businesses, discount terms, penalties and the €40 indemnity. The reform adds the client's SIREN, the delivery address if different, the nature of the transaction and, where relevant, the option for VAT on debits: compulsory for large and mid-size companies since 1 September 2026, for the others from 1 September 2027. This template already has them.
Will this invoice template still serve after 1 September 2027?
Not between two VAT-registered businesses established in France: SMEs and micro-enterprises, including those under the VAT franchise, will then have to issue structured electronic invoices through an approved platform, as large companies have since 1 September 2026. The template will remain usable for private clients, clients established abroad and transactions outside the reform. Data on sales to private clients and abroad will, however, have to be sent to the tax authority (e-reporting) from the same date. Every VAT-registered business must already be able to receive electronic invoices.
What must a sole trader or micro-entrepreneur add to an invoice in France?
Their name must be preceded or followed by the initials “EI” or the words “entrepreneur individuel”, with their SIREN. Under the VAT franchise they charge no VAT and choose the mention “TVA non applicable, article 293 B du code général des impôts”. The invoice is written in French, which the law requires for a private client, and kept for ten years; one copy goes to the client.
