Common questions

What must an application to a Spanish public body contain?
Article 66.1 of Spanish Law 39/2015 asks for the applicant's name and surnames and, where there is one, the representative's; the means or place for notifications; the facts, reasons and request; place and date; signature; and the body addressed, with its identification code if you know it. If something is missing, the body asks you to complete it within ten days; if you do not, the application is treated as withdrawn.
How long does a Spanish public body have to decide on an application?
The time set by the rules of that procedure; if they set none, three months from when the application reaches the registry of the competent body (art. 21.3 of Spanish Law 39/2015). If it does not decide in time, its silence has the effect the law gives it for that procedure. Always keep the registry receipt showing the date of entry.
Where can a general application be filed on paper in Spain?
At the registry office of the body itself or of any other public body, or at a post office as administrative mail, with the envelope open so the first page is stamped (art. 16.4 of Spanish Law 39/2015); also at a Spanish consulate. A company, an association or a registered professional acting as such must file it electronically (art. 14.2). If it goes to a regional or local body in a region with a co-official language, that body must also accept it in that language.

The official invitation letter (carta de invitación) is applied for in person by the host at the police station where they live, paying the fee on form 790 code 012 (Spanish Order PRE/1283/2007); DocMuse does not sell it. This Spanish document, in Spanish, only accompanies it: the host's personal letter to the Spanish embassy or consulate, with the relationship, purpose and dates of the visit, the home and the costs the host covers. It does not replace the official letter. Sign it and send it to the guest, who files it with the visa application.
