This document is in Italian

The PDF you download is in Italian — that is the language it has to be filed in, so it is not translated. Everything on this page is here to tell you what it says.

An Italian letter, in Italian, from a parent or guardian to the head teacher handing in the diagnosis of a specific learning disorder (dyslexia, dysorthography, dysgraphia, dyscalculia) and asking for a personalised learning plan (PDP) with compensatory tools and dispensatory measures (Italian law 170/2010), and to take part in drafting it. Many schools have their own free form. Hand it in at the school office against a registration number or send it by PEC. It holds health data, so it is sold blank and filled in by hand.

Common questions

By when must an Italian school prepare the PDP for a pupil with a learning disorder?
The guidelines annexed to Italian ministerial decree no. 5669 of 12 July 2011 set the drafting of the personalised learning plan within the first term of the school year. For a diagnosis handed in during the year, ask the school for the date of the class council that will approve it. Many schools have a free form for handing in the diagnosis. In the province of Bolzano a state school must also accept the letter in German, and in the Aosta Valley in French.
What does the personalised learning plan contain?
The compensatory tools (for example text-to-speech, a calculator, concept maps) and the dispensatory measures (for example no reading aloud, more time in tests) that the class council considers suitable, and the assessment criteria. The family takes part in defining the PDP and receives a copy. The letter asks to be invited before it is approved.
Does this letter also cover a support teacher?
No. The PDP concerns the specific learning disorders of Italian law 170/2010. A disability certified under law 104/1992 follows a different route, with the individualised education plan (PEI) and any support teacher, which this letter does not cover. The letter also asks that the diagnosis be kept confidential, as it holds health data: that is why it is sold blank.

Related documents

  • Request for clearance to transfer to another school (Italy)

An Italian letter, in Italian, from a parent or guardian to the head of the pupil’s current school asking for the nulla osta (clearance) to transfer the pupil to another school, also during the school year, and for the school records to be sent on. It gives the pupil, the class, the new school and the reason, with the other parent’s signature where parental responsibility is shared. Many schools have their own free form at the office or online. In compulsory schooling no stamp duty is due (Italian Presidential Decree 642/1972, table B, art. 11). Hand it in at the school office or send it by PEC.

  • Request for a certificate of school enrolment and attendance (Italy)

An Italian request, in Italian, from a parent or an adult student to the school office for a certificate of enrolment or attendance for private use: an employer, a bank, a sports body, a foreign authority. Many schools issue certificates through the electronic register; with public offices, and now with private parties too, a self-declaration is enough. It has the space for the 16 € revenue stamp (sold at tobacconists; @e.bollo online), which is not applied where the use is exempt. Hand it in at the school office or send it by PEC.

  • Parent’s declaration for returning to school after illness (Italy)

An Italian declaration, in Italian, by a parent or guardian for the school that the pupil was absent for health reasons between the dates given and that the parent followed the paediatrician’s or family doctor’s advice. It is for regions or schools that ask for it instead of a medical certificate, which most Italian regions have abolished. Many schools have their own form or a function in the electronic register, free of charge. It holds health data, so it is sold blank and filled in by hand.

  • Notice of a pupil’s absence for family reasons (Italy)

An Italian letter, in Italian, from a parent or guardian to the head teacher and the class coordinator announcing in advance, or justifying afterwards, a pupil’s absence for family reasons (a trip, a move, a family event), with the dates, and asking what homework and topics to catch up on. For short absences many schools use the electronic register or the absence booklet, which are free. It is not for absences through illness. Hand it in at the school office, send it by PEC or upload it to the register where the school allows.
