Common questions

Does a duplicate have the same force as the original?

Yes, where it is issued by the authority that issued the original and is marked as a duplicate. It is not a copy — it is issued from the particulars in the register and replaces the lost document.

Do I have to declare the original invalid?

For some documents an announcement or a declaration of the circumstances of the loss is required. The application has a field for the circumstances precisely for that — it is also your protection if the lost document is used by someone else.

What if my name has changed?

Give the name as it was when the original was issued and attach the document evidencing the change. The issuer searches an archive, and the archive holds the old name — a search on the new one alone often comes back with nothing.

Can somebody else collect it for me?

Only on an express authority, and for some documents a notarised one. Arrange that in advance if you cannot go in person — otherwise the duplicate is issued and stays at the counter.
