Common questions
- Is there a free model letter for leaving a Swiss basic health insurer?
- Yes. The Federal Office of Public Health publishes free model letters on priminfo.admin.ch under «Musterbriefe» — one to terminate the basic insurance and one to join a new insurer — together with the premium calculator for comparing insurers. Many insurers also have their own forms. This letter is a fill-in version with fields for children insured with you, the new insurer and your supplementary cover.
- By when must my notice reach the Swiss health insurer?
- To change on 1 January 2027 after the premium announcement, the notice must reach the insurer by Monday 30 November 2026 — receipt counts, not the postmark (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG). The Federal Office of Public Health advises sending it by 15 November by registered post or A-Post Plus. With the ordinary deductible and free choice of doctor you may also change at the end of June, the notice arriving by 31 March (Art. 7 para. 1 KVG). With a higher deductible or a restricted-choice model (from 2027 called PRAXIS, TEL_DIG, PHARM or FLEX, such as family-doctor, HMO or telemedicine models) only at the end of the year (Art. 94 para. 2, Art. 100 para. 3 KVV).
- When does the old Swiss health insurance end, and what can stop the change?
- Join the new insurer at the same time; in basic insurance it must accept you without reservation and without health questions. The old insurance ends only when the new insurer has told the old one that you are covered without a gap; the old insurer then tells you the end date (Art. 7 para. 5 KVG). A change on 1 January is blocked by premiums, cost-sharing or default interest reminded by 30 November, and by enforcement costs, if they are still unpaid on 31 December (Art. 64a para. 6 KVG, Art. 105l para. 2 KVV). A child's arrears block only that child's change.
- Do I have to cancel my supplementary insurance with the same Swiss insurer?
- No. The insurer may not force you to cancel your supplementary insurance, nor cancel it itself merely because you changed basic insurer (Art. 7 paras. 7 and 8 KVG). Supplementary insurance has its own notice periods under the Insurance Contract Act and the policy conditions. Cancel it only once new cover is certain: a supplementary insurer may ask health questions and turn an application down.
