For policyholders in Switzerland, in French: terminates a supplementary health insurance, a household, liability, legal-protection or other insurance under the Insurance Contract Act (LCA) — ordinarily after three years with three months' notice (Art. 35a LCA), on the date the policy conditions allow, because of a premium increase, or for good cause, else on the next possible date. Basic health insurance (LAMal) is terminated by a separate letter. Send it registered; the Act also accepts text form such as e-mail.

Common questions
- On which dates can a Swiss supplementary insurance policy be ended?
- Ordinarily for the end of the third insurance year or any later year, with three months' notice (Art. 35a LCA); this also applies to contracts made before 2022. The policy and its conditions may allow shorter terms or yearly notice, and on a premium increase they usually give a right to terminate for the date it takes effect. For good cause you may terminate at any time (Art. 35b LCA). The three-year rule does not apply to life insurance, which follows its own rules.
- Does the Swiss Insurance Contract Act accept a cancellation sent by e-mail?
- The revised Act accepts, besides writing, any means that allows proof by text (Art. 35a LCA) — so an e-mail or the insurer's customer portal too. But proving that the notice arrived in time is up to you. Send it registered early enough to arrive before the three-month period begins, and keep the copy and the postal receipt.
- May my health insurer end my supplementary cover on its own initiative?
- In supplementary health insurance the insurer may not give ordinary notice; only you may (Art. 35a LCA). It can end the contract only in exceptional cases, such as fraud, a breach of the duty to disclose or unpaid premiums. Changing basic insurer leaves supplementary cover in place. Cancel it only once new cover is accepted, because a new supplementary insurer may ask health questions and refuse.
- Can I revoke a Swiss insurance contract shortly after signing instead of cancelling it?
- Yes: within 14 days of accepting it, you may revoke a new insurance contract in writing or in any other form allowing proof by text (Art. 2a LCA), without giving reasons. Once that period is over, termination follows the rules above.
