For policyholders in Switzerland: terminates a supplementary health, household, liability, legal-protection or other policy under the Insurance Contract Act (VVG) — ordinarily after three years with three months' notice (Art. 35a VVG), on the date the conditions allow, after a premium increase or for good cause (Art. 35b VVG), else on the next possible date. Basic health insurance needs a separate letter. Send it by registered post. Swiss authorities and courts work in their official language — German, French or Italian — so this English version is for dealings between private parties.

Common questions
- When does the Swiss Insurance Contract Act let a policyholder leave?
- Ordinarily at the end of the third insurance year or any later year, with three months' notice, including contracts made before 2022 (Art. 35a and 103a VVG). Leaving earlier works only if the contract allows it, with the same periods for both sides (Art. 35a para. 2). A premium increase usually gives a right to terminate under the general conditions. Good cause (wichtiger Grund) allows termination at any time (Art. 35b). Life insurance is outside the three-year rule (Art. 35a para. 3).
- Will a Swiss insurer accept a termination written in English or sent by e-mail?
- The Act requires writing or any form allowing proof by text (Art. 35a para. 1 VVG), so e-mail or the customer portal is valid; no language is prescribed, and many insurers handle English. You must prove that the notice arrived at least three months before the end date, so send it by registered post with a few days to spare and keep the receipt. Where a dispute may follow, the German, French or Italian version is the safer choice.
- Can a Swiss supplementary health insurer end my cover, and can I undo a new policy?
- In supplementary health insurance only the policyholder has the ordinary right to terminate (Art. 35a para. 4 VVG): the insurer can end the contract only exceptionally, for instance for fraud, a breach of the duty to disclose or unpaid premiums, and not because you change basic insurer. A new policy can be withdrawn from within fourteen days, in writing or text form and without reasons; posting it on the last day is in time (Art. 2a VVG). Keep old cover until new cover is confirmed.
