For people insured in Switzerland, in English: terminates the compulsory basic health insurance (Grundversicherung) after the new premium is announced, for 31 December (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG), or with three months' notice for the end of June or December, for you and children insured with you; it names your new insurer and leaves supplementary insurance running. To change on 1 January, it must reach the insurer by 30 November. The Federal Office of Public Health offers free German, French and Italian model letters on priminfo.admin.ch. Swiss authorities and courts work in their official language — German, French or Italian — so this English version is for dealings between private parties.

Common questions
- Will a Swiss health insurer accept a termination letter written in English?
- No statute prescribes a language for a notice to a health insurer; what matters is that the insurer can understand it, and many insurers handle English. The letter names the Swiss terms in brackets so that it cannot be misread. If you prefer to be safe, the Federal Office of Public Health's free model letters on priminfo.admin.ch are in German, French and Italian. Swiss authorities and courts work in their official language — German, French or Italian — so this English version is for dealings between private parties.
- What is the last day to switch basic health insurer for 2027?
- Your notice must arrive at the insurer by Monday 30 November 2026 — the postmark does not count (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG). The Federal Office of Public Health recommends posting it by 15 November, registered or by A-Post Plus. With a higher deductible or a restricted-choice model (from 2027 called PRAXIS, TEL_DIG, PHARM or FLEX, such as family-doctor, HMO or telemedicine models) you can change only at the end of the year; with the ordinary deductible and free choice of doctor, also at the end of June, the notice arriving by 31 March (Art. 7 para. 1 KVG; Art. 94 para. 2, Art. 100 para. 3 KVV).
- What else do I need to do when changing Swiss health insurer?
- Apply to the new insurer at the same time; for basic insurance it must accept you without health questions. Your old insurance ends only once the new insurer has confirmed to the old one that your cover continues without a break (Art. 7 para. 5 KVG). Pay premiums, cost-sharing or default interest reminded by 30 November, and any enforcement costs, by 31 December, because unpaid arrears block the change (Art. 64a para. 6 KVG, Art. 105l para. 2 KVV); a child's arrears block only that child's change. Keep supplementary insurance until new cover is certain: the old insurer may not cancel it merely because you leave (Art. 7 para. 8 KVG).
