Common questions
- When can I cancel supplementary insurance in Switzerland?
- Ordinarily at the end of the third year of insurance or any later year, with three months' notice (Art. 35a VVG); this applies to contracts concluded before 2022 too. The policy and its conditions may allow shorter terms or yearly notice, and on a premium increase they usually give a right to cancel for the date it takes effect. For an important reason you may terminate at any time (Art. 35b VVG). The three-year rule does not apply to life insurance, which follows its own rules.
- Is cancelling a Swiss insurance policy by e-mail enough?
- The revised Insurance Contract Act accepts, besides writing, any form that allows proof by text (Art. 35a VVG) — so an e-mail or the insurer's customer portal too. But you must prove that the notice arrived in time. So send it by registered post early enough to arrive before the three-month period starts, and keep a copy and the receipt.
- Can a Swiss health insurer cancel my supplementary insurance itself?
- In supplementary health insurance the insurer may not give ordinary notice; only you may (Art. 35a VVG). It can end the contract only in exceptional cases, such as fraud, a breach of the duty to disclose or unpaid premiums. Changing your basic insurer leaves the supplementary cover in place. Cancel it only once new cover is confirmed, because a new supplementary insurer may ask health questions and refuse.
- Can I withdraw from a Swiss insurance contract I have just taken out?
- Yes: within 14 days of agreeing to it, you may withdraw from a new insurance contract in writing or in text form (Art. 2a VVG), without giving reasons. Once that period is over, termination follows the rules above.
