Common questions
- What does the SEM recommend putting in a letter inviting a visitor to Switzerland?
- The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) leaflet recommends at least: your statement that the person is expected, full details of both of you (surname, first name, date of birth, address, phone, e-mail, nationality), the period of the stay, the date of the letter and your signature; who pays travel, accommodation and food may be added. The letter is in an official Swiss language, Italian included, needs no set form and no certification. The free leaflet on sem.admin.ch contains a model. The letter creates no legally binding duty to pay.
- Where does a host living in Ticino file the guarantee declaration (dichiarazione di garanzia)?
- It is needed only if the Swiss embassy or consulate asks for it, for instance because your guest's means are not enough. The embassy gives your guest the official form; it cannot be downloaded. You fill it in as guarantor and send it, with the documents asked for and a fee, to the competent authority: in Ticino the canton's Ufficio della migrazione (migration office); in ZH, BE, VD, AG and other cantons the commune. You are then liable for uncovered costs up to CHF 30'000, irrevocably, for twelve months from entry (SEM leaflet).
- Does the guest hand in the invitation letter, or must it go straight to the embassy?
- Usually your guest hands in a scan or copy with the visa application at the Swiss embassy or consulate for their place of residence; the embassy may, however, require you to send the letter to it directly (SEM leaflet). Before the application, check that embassy's instructions on swiss-visa.ch. Further information may be asked for at any time during the procedure and at entry, and there is no right to a visa. Keep a signed copy.
