Consent is only one of the grounds for processing, and the most fragile one: it has to be specific, informed and capable of being withdrawn, and silence or a pre-ticked box is not consent. So this declaration lists the purposes separately and states the right to withdraw expressly. If you process data under a contract or under a statutory duty, you do not need consent and should not ask for it.

Common questions

Do I always need consent in order to process data?
No, and this is the commonest mistake. Consent is one of several grounds; where you process under a contract or a statutory duty, consent is not asked for. Consent sought unnecessarily weakens your position, because it can be withdrawn.
What makes consent valid?
That it is freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous. A pre-ticked box, text buried in the terms and conditions, and consent to everything at once do not meet that.
Can the person withdraw it?
At any time, and as easily as they gave it. Withdrawal does not make past processing unlawful, but it stops future processing — which is why the declaration states exactly how it is withdrawn.
Why do I have to list the purposes separately?
Because consent to everything at once is not specific. Where the purposes differ — fulfilling an order, a newsletter, profiling — they are consented to separately, and the person can accept one and refuse another.
