The right to be forgotten under Article 17 of the General Data Protection Regulation. It is not unconditional: data the organisation keeps by law, for accounting, or to defend a legal claim stay. So the request names exactly which data and on what ground, and asks for a written answer — including when the answer is a refusal, so that there is something to appeal against.

Common questions

Can they refuse to erase my data?
Yes, and lawfully. Data kept by law, for accounting, or to defend a legal claim stay. That is why the request insists the refusal be in writing and say which data are being kept and on what ground.
Does erasure remove me from everywhere?
Only from that controller, and it is obliged to notify the recipients it disclosed the data to. That is why the request asks for it expressly — otherwise the data go on living with partners you know nothing about.
Will they close my account if I ask for erasure?
That is possible where the data are necessary for the service itself. If you want to stay a customer and drop only part of the processing, frame the request for the specific data rather than for everything.
When is this right at its strongest?
Where the processing rests on consent and you withdraw it, or where the data are no longer needed for the purpose they were collected for. Where the ground is a contract or a statutory duty, the right gives way.
