The right under Article 15 of the General Data Protection Regulation: to find out what data an organisation holds about you, where it got them, who it gives them to and how long it keeps them. The request is free and goes straight to the controller, not to the regulator. Word it specifically — a blanket request for everything usually comes back with the least that will do.

Common questions

Is there a charge for a request like this?
No. The first copy of the data is provided free; a fee may be asked only for manifestly unfounded or excessive repeat requests. If you are asked to pay for a first request, ask on what basis.
Do I have to say why I want them?
No. The right of access is not tied to a reason and an organisation cannot require one as a condition. The field for scope is there to narrow the search, not to justify the request.
Can they refuse me?
They can limit access where it affects other people's rights, but they cannot stay silent. An answer is always owed, and a refusal has to give reasons — which is also what grounds a complaint to the supervisory authority.
Why should I attach proof of identity?
Because the controller has to be sure the data go to the person they are about. Reasonable identification is their duty — a request without it often stalls at exactly this stage.
