The employer keeps the personnel file and issues certified copies of what is in it. The request lists the documents you are after by name, because a generally worded one usually comes back with a single sheet.

- Is the employer obliged to give me copies?
- The employer keeps the personnel file and issues certified copies of the documents in it at the employee's request. That is why the request is made in writing — it establishes exactly what was asked for and when.
- Why list the documents by name?
- Because a generally worded request is usually met with the least that will do — a single sheet. Listing the contract, the amendments, the job description and the orders is the difference between full and formal compliance.
- Do I need certified copies or will plain ones do?
- It depends on who is asking for them. A bank and a court usually insist on certified ones; for your own use plain ones are enough. Ask for certified by default — being sent back for certification costs a second round.
- Can I ask for them after leaving?
- Yes. The personnel file is kept after the employment ends, and a former employer remains obliged to issue documents from it. State the period you worked there so the file is found more quickly.
