Common questions

Is the employer obliged to write me a reference?
No. A reference is an evaluative document and nobody can be compelled to give one, unlike a certificate of facts. That is why this is a request that proposes a date rather than demanding one.
Can I suggest what it should say?
Yes, and that is often the difference between a generic reference and a useful one. The request has a field for what you need it for — name the post or the programme you are applying to, and which projects are worth mentioning.
Which language should I ask for it in?
The language of the institution you will present it to. If it is for abroad, ask for it in English or with a translation — the request has a field for that, because translating it afterwards costs time and money.
What if I no longer work there?
It can still be asked for after you have left. Your chances are better if you name the person you reported to directly — a reference is usually written by them rather than by the HR department.
