The bank, the court or the social services office wants a document showing your income, and the employer wants a written request. This form is that request: for which period, for what purpose, in how many copies. Stating the purpose matters — a certificate for a loan and a certificate for social assistance often carry different figures.

- What do I need a certificate like this for?
- Most often for a bank on a loan, for a landlord, for a court, for social assistance, or for an embassy on a visa. Each wants a different period and different figures, so the request states what it is for — that way the issuer knows what to include.
- How long does it take to issue?
- It follows the employer's internal rules. If you need it by a deadline, write that into the request expressly rather than relying on a word with a colleague in the payroll office.
- Can the employer refuse?
- An employer owes an employee documents about facts connected with the employment. A refusal without grounds is rare, but that is why the request is made in writing — so that there is something to appeal against if it comes to it.
- Can I ask for it after I have already left?
- Yes. A former employer keeps the personnel file and issues documents from it after the employment ends. State the period you worked there so it is clear which years you are after.
