The receipt a payer can demand from whoever takes the money (art. 462 of the Polish Civil Code) — when repaying a loan, returning a deposit, or paying a price or instalment in cash: who pays and who receives, the amount in words, what it is for, the date and method of payment, and whether it settles the debt or leaves a balance. It is the basic proof of payment when money changes hands directly.

Common questions

Must someone who receives money in Poland give a receipt?
Yes, if the payer asks — a debtor who performs can demand a receipt from the creditor, and where there is a reason, in a special form, such as with a notarised signature (art. 462 of the Civil Code). The debtor bears the cost of the receipt unless agreed otherwise. For cash payments, a receipt is often the only proof the debt was paid.
After paying off a debt, can the loan agreement or note be demanded back?
Yes. A debtor who has paid in full can demand, besides a receipt, the return of the document evidencing the debt, such as a loan agreement or acknowledgement of debt, and if the creditor cannot return it, a written statement that it was lost or destroyed (art. 465 of the Civil Code). For part-payment, a receipt stating the balance still owed is enough.
Is a receipt still needed when paying by bank transfer in Poland?
Usually not, since the transfer confirmation with a payment reference proves the money moved. A receipt helps, though, when the transfer does not make clear which debt it pays, or when the parties want to confirm that the payment closes all accounts between them. For cash, the receipt is the key evidence and is worth making in two copies.
