A complaint about a service follows a different logic from one about goods: nothing is returned, and what you ask for is that the work be done again, that the defects be put right, or that the price be reduced. The document sets out what was agreed, what was delivered and which of the three you are choosing — the choice is yours and has to be stated, or the trader makes it for you.

Common questions
- How does it differ from a complaint about goods?
- With a service nothing is returned. What is asked for is that the work be done again, that the defects be put right, or that the price be reduced. So this sets out what was agreed and what was delivered, rather than what is wrong with an object.
- Who chooses what to ask for?
- You do, and the choice has to be stated. If the complaint does not say what you want, the trader decides for you — usually whatever is cheapest for them, which is rarely what you need.
- What if there was no written contract for the service?
- What was agreed is also proved by correspondence, a quotation, messages and the payment. That is why the form has a separate field for what was agreed — it is where you reconstruct the substance of a spoken arrangement.
- Can I refuse to let them do the work again?
- If trust has gone or the timescale is now pointless, you can press for another remedy. Justify it in the complaint — refusing a repair without explanation weakens your position.
