Car sale agreements and other vehicle documents in Greece
Since 27 April 2026 a privately used car or motorcycle in Greece changes owner only through the digital transfer on gov.gr, or through a citizens' service centre (KEP): the seller starts the application and the buyer accepts it. The private car sale agreement (ιδιωτικό συμφωνητικό πώλησης αυτοκινήτου) records the deal — the price, known defects, the handover date — and binds both sides to complete the transfer by a set date, because until then the seller remains the registered owner. When the car is handed over before the transfer, the handover record for a sold vehicle fixes the time, the mileage and the condition, and proves from when the car was in the buyer's hands.
The seller's motor insurance ends by law 30 days after ownership or possession of the vehicle passes, and the insurer returns the unearned premium (art. 8(2) of Presidential Decree 237/1986); the notice to the insurer of a vehicle transfer claims it. After an accident, the insured must tell their own insurer within eight days of learning of it (art. 7 of Law 2496/1997), and anyone who suffered loss can claim directly from the insurer of the vehicle at fault with the claim to the at-fault driver's insurer.
A ticket under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025) is challenged with an objection to a traffic-fine notice within three days of service, filed with the head of the authority that recorded the offence (art. 107). To let someone else drive your car, the authorisation to drive the owner's vehicle sets the period, the countries and the limits; its text can go into the gov.gr authorisation, or the signed PDF can be certified free on docs.gov.gr. The documents are in Greek, and each page describes its document in English. You fill one in online and download a finished PDF, or download it blank. They are templates, not legal advice.

Handover record for a sold vehicle (Greece)
The record of the moment the buyer took the car: date and hour, odometer reading, fuel, keys, documents, accessories and condition. In Greece it matters more than elsewhere: handover can come days before the digital transfer on gov.gr, the transfer records no handover at all, and until it is done the seller remains the registered owner — and the one fines are sent to. The record proves who had the vehicle, and from when fines and damage are the buyer's — and handover starts the 30 days after which the seller's insurance ends.
Claim to the at-fault driver's insurer (Greece)
The claim in which someone who suffered loss in a road accident in Greece asks for compensation directly from the insurer of the vehicle at fault, without going through its driver: the injured party has a direct claim against the insurer (Presidential Decree 237/1986), and the insurer owes a reasoned offer, or a reasoned reply, within three months of the claim. It sets out the accident, the at-fault vehicle and its policy, what happened, the damage, the amount, availability for inspection and the IBAN. Remember, too, to notify your own insurer within eight days.
Authorisation to drive the owner's vehicle (Greece)
A document by which a car's owner in Greece lets someone else drive it for a set period and in set countries — a trip abroad, a family member, a colleague. It states what the driver may do, what not (sell, hire out, hand the car to anyone else), and who bears fines, with a summary in English. The gov.gr e-authorisation is free: paste this text into its free-text box, or sign the PDF and have the signature certified on docs.gov.gr or at a citizens' service centre (KEP). For travel abroad, check what the destination country requires.
Objection to a traffic-fine notice (Greece)
Three days from service: that is all the time the new Greek Road Traffic Code allows for objecting to a traffic ticket (art. 107 of Law 5209/2025), and this document is written to be filed the same day. It goes to the authority of the officer who recorded the offence, electronically or, where that is not possible, by any other suitable means, with the ticket's details, the grounds, the evidence and, if someone else was driving, who. Camera fines are objected to through Gov.gr Wallet within the same three days. The old half-fine for paying within ten days no longer exists.
Notice to the insurer of a vehicle transfer and claim for unearned premium (Greece)
The seller's letter to their motor insurer in Greece after the car's digital transfer. A Greek policy neither passes to the buyer nor needs cancelling: it lapses by law 30 days after ownership or possession of the car passes (art. 8(2) of Presidential Decree 237/1986), and the insurer must return the unearned premium for the rest of the period. The letter identifies the policy and the vehicle, gives the dates of handover and transfer with the gov.gr certificate, and asks for the refund to an IBAN and for written confirmation of when cover ended.
Private car sale agreement (Greece)
A Greek private agreement for selling a used car between individuals, written for the rule that applies now: the agreement does not transfer the car. Ownership passes with the digital transfer on gov.gr, the only route between private persons since 27 April 2026. So it binds the seller to start the transfer and the buyer to accept it by a set date and within 30 days of handover, before the seller's insurance lapses, and puts fines on the buyer from handover. It gives the price in words, the known defects and the two-year limitation period of art. 554 of the Greek Civil Code, and can be signed online on docs.gov.gr.
