The seller's letter to their motor insurer in Greece after the car's digital transfer. A Greek policy neither passes to the buyer nor needs cancelling: it lapses by law 30 days after ownership or possession of the car passes (art. 8(2) of Presidential Decree 237/1986), and the insurer must return the unearned premium for the rest of the period. The letter identifies the policy and the vehicle, gives the dates of handover and transfer with the gov.gr certificate, and asks for the refund to an IBAN and for written confirmation of when cover ended.

Common questions
- Does a Greek motor policy have to be cancelled when the car is sold?
- No. Under art. 8(2) of Presidential Decree 237/1986 the policy ends by law 30 days after ownership or possession of the car passes, with no notice from the seller. Until then the car stays insured, which gives the buyer time to insure it in their own name with the digital transfer certificate. The letter is needed so that the insurer learns of the transfer and returns the premium for the rest of the period.
- How much premium comes back after a vehicle transfer in Greece?
- The unearned part: the premium for the time from the end of cover to the end of the period paid for. Cover ends 30 days after the car was handed over or transferred, whichever came first. The exact calculation and any charges follow the policy terms, as does what happens to optional cover such as roadside assistance or glass breakage. If the period ends within those 30 days, nothing is left to refund.
- Can the letter go to the Greek insurer before the digital transfer is complete?
- Better not. The letter proves the transfer with the gov.gr certificate, and until then the seller remains the registered owner, so the policy is not cancelled. Cover still ends by law 30 days after handover if handover came first, so the transfer should be completed within that time. Once it is, download the certificate from gov.gr and attach it to the letter together with the handover record.
