Authorisation to drive the owner's vehicle (Greece)

Published byDocMuse

This document is in Greek

The PDF you download is in Greek — that is the language it has to be filed in, so it is not translated. Everything on this page is here to tell you what it says.

A document by which a car's owner in Greece lets someone else drive it for a set period and in set countries — a trip abroad, a family member, a colleague. It states what the driver may do, what not (sell, hire out, hand the car to anyone else), and who bears fines, with a summary in English. The gov.gr e-authorisation is free: paste this text into its free-text box, or sign the PDF and have the signature certified on docs.gov.gr or at a citizens' service centre (KEP). For travel abroad, check what the destination country requires.

Common questions

How is this text used with the free gov.gr e-authorisation in Greece?
Two ways, both free. In gov.gr's authorisation service, logged in with Taxisnet credentials, paste the document's terms into the free-text box; the digital authorisation has the same force as one with an authenticated signature (Law 4727/2020). Or sign the PDF and upload it to docs.gov.gr for digital certification, or have the signature authenticated at a citizens' service centre (KEP) — no longer at a police station (Law 4937/2022).
Will border guards and police in another country accept a Greek authorisation to drive?
There is no single rule; it depends on the country. Before travelling, check with the destination country's embassy or consulate whether it wants the authorisation with a certified signature, a translation or an apostille. docs.gov.gr certifies signatures on documents in Greek or English, and this document carries a summary in English. Check with the insurer too that the policy covers this driver, for the whole period and in the countries on the route.
Who pays fines while someone else drives the car in Greece under an authorisation?
Whoever committed the offence. The authorisation states that the driver bears fines and damage caused by their own fault while it runs. If a camera fine reaches the owner, the owner names the driver in a solemn declaration within seven days of service, in person or through Gov.gr Wallet, or is treated as the offender; the authorisation, with its dates and the driver's details, backs that declaration up.
