Common questions

How does it differ from a contract for work?
Under a contract for work a result is owed; here an activity is. That is why what is agreed is scope, frequency and response time rather than the acceptance of a finished thing.
Why should I set out what is outside the scope?
Because that is the line almost every dispute on retainer work turns on. What is expressly excluded turns an extra request into a new order, rather than into an expectation that it is covered by the monthly fee.
What does response time mean?
The time within which the provider starts dealing with a request, not the time within which they finish it. The two are often confused — if you need a time to resolution, write that down separately as well.
How is it ended before the term is up?
By written notice of the agreed number of days, with what has been done up to the termination date being paid for. Without a notice clause, getting out of a long agreement becomes a negotiation at exactly the moment relations have soured.
