Work in Ireland: leave, pay, notice and workplace complaints

Employment rights in Ireland are enforced by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), whose complaint form is free and online; a complaint is made within six months of the breach, or twelve where there was reasonable cause for the delay. Before that, a letter about unpaid wages or holiday pay asks the employer to pay, and a formal grievance letter starts the employer's own procedure. An employer gives the core terms in writing within five days of starting and the full statement within a month: the request for payslips or a statement of terms asks for what is missing.

Annual leave is at least four working weeks a year, at times the employer sets after consulting you: put an annual leave request in writing. Parents have 26 weeks of unpaid parental leave per child under 12, on six weeks' notice (parental leave notice), and any employee may request remote working, or, as a parent or carer, flexible working for caring, which the employer must answer within four weeks (eight at most). Statutory sick pay covers 5 days a year in 2026 with a medical certificate: tell your employer you are off sick.

To leave, a resignation letter gives the notice your contract requires, at least one week after 13 weeks' service. There is no P45 any more: your pay and tax record is the Employment Detail Summary in Revenue's myAccount. Citizens Information and the WRC's information service give free guidance; DocMuse is a private paid service, not a government website, and gives no legal advice.
