The letter in which an insured person in Cyprus notifies a private insurer of a hospital stay, an operation or other treatment and claims the benefit the health policy provides: the policy, the treatment, the provider and dates, the amount in figures and words, the IBAN and the attachments. It states whether part of the treatment was covered by GESY, the national health system, or by other insurance. It is addressed to a private insurer, not to GESY, whose services are provided through its contracted providers.

Common questions
- What is the difference between GESY and private health insurance in Cyprus?
- GESY, the General Healthcare System run by the Health Insurance Organisation, provides care through the providers under contract with it; this letter is not addressed to it. Private health insurance covers what the policy says, for example treatment outside GESY or costs GESY does not cover, and the claim goes to the insurer. That is why the claim states whether part of the treatment was covered by GESY.
- When must the insurer be told about a hospital stay in Cyprus?
- Within the time the policy sets, which you should check in its terms. If the policy requires notice or approval before a planned admission or operation, seek it in good time, since its terms also say what happens if it is not given. Send the letter as soon as possible after the treatment, by registered post or by hand against a signature; missing receipts can follow.
- What can the insured do if a Cypriot insurer rejects a health claim?
- Ask for a written, reasoned answer and make a written complaint to the insurer through its complaints procedure. If that does not settle it, the Financial Ombudsman examines consumer complaints against insurers, once the written complaint to the insurer has been made and within the time limits of its Law (Law 84(I)/2010). The last step is court, where this claim proves when the insurer was told.

- Complaint about medical care (Cyprus)
A patient's written complaint in Cyprus when they consider their rights were breached in a hospital, clinic or surgery: what happened, when and in which department, which right was affected and what is asked for. It goes to the provider's Patients' Rights Officer, as Law 1(I)/2005 provides, and asks that, if it is not settled there, it be passed to the district Complaints Examination Committee. It is sent by registered post or handed over against a signature, so the date it was made can be proved.
- Request for access to a medical record (Cyprus)
The written request in which a patient in Cyprus asks a hospital, clinic or doctor for access to their medical record and a copy of it: history, discharge note, tests, imaging. It rests on the Safeguarding and Protection of Patients' Rights Law (Law 1(I)/2005) and art. 15 of the General Data Protection Regulation. It names the department, the period of treatment, the documents wanted and how to receive them. The first copy is free, and the answer is due within one month, extendable by two months only for complex or numerous requests.
- Parent's consent for a minor's medical care by a carer (Cyprus)
The written consent by which a parent lets whoever looks after their child in their absence — a grandparent, a school-trip or camp leader — take the child to a doctor in Cyprus or abroad, receive information and agree to routine medical care for a set period. It gives the doctor the child's allergies, medicines and GESY personal doctor, leaves serious procedures to the parent, and follows the Cypriot Patients' Rights Law, under which a parent consents for a minor and the child's own view counts for more as the child grows older.
