For passengers whose flight from Switzerland — or into it on an airline from Switzerland, the EU, Iceland or Norway — arrived three hours or more late, was cancelled less than 14 days before departure, or who were denied boarding. The letter, in French, claims the fixed compensation of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, which applies in Switzerland through the air transport agreement with the EU: €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, by distance, from the airline that operated the flight. The airline's own form is free; the BAZL takes complaints online. Send it by registered post.

Common questions
- How much can a claim in French ask for a delayed or cancelled flight from Switzerland?
- Per passenger, €250 for flights of up to 1,500 km, €400 for longer flights within the EU and for other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 for other flights over 3,500 km. The airline may halve the sum if it rerouted you and you arrived only a little later than planned, and owes nothing for extraordinary circumstances it could not have avoided, such as bad weather.
- Which flights from or to Switzerland can a claim in French cover?
- Every flight from an airport in Switzerland, the EU, Iceland or Norway, on any airline, and flights into them from elsewhere on an airline from one of those countries. You claim from the airline that operated the flight, even if you booked elsewhere. Keep receipts for meals or a hotel you paid for yourself while you waited.
- Where can I complain in Switzerland if the airline refuses my claim in French?
- To the airline first. If it refuses or does not answer, the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL) takes complaints about flights from Switzerland online (bazl.admin.ch), but does not enforce payment. For the money, the conciliation authority at the competent place of jurisdiction is the next step (Art. 197 CPC), and up to CHF 30'000.00 the simplified procedure applies (Art. 243 para. 1 CPC).
