An English final demand to a debtor in Liechtenstein who reads English, before you apply to the Princely Court of Justice (Landgericht) for a conditional payment order (bedingter Zahlbefehl, §§ 577 ff. ZPO): the sum owed, due date, deadline, your account and default interest — the statutory 5% a year (§ 1000 Abs. 1 ABGB), between businesses eight points above the reference rate (Art. 336b ADHGB), or the agreed rate. No collection fee. The court works in German only, so the application is made in German. Print, sign and send by registered post.

Common questions
- Why does a Liechtenstein demand lead to a court payment order and not a debt collection office?
- Liechtenstein has no debt collection office: money claims go to the Princely Court of Justice (Landgericht), which issues a conditional payment order (Zahlbefehl) on the creditor's application without hearing the debtor (§§ 577–581 ZPO). The order tells the debtor to pay within 14 days of service or to object (Widerspruch); an objection needs no reasons and takes away the order's force (§§ 582, 584, 585 ZPO), after which the creditor must sue.
- May I send this demand in English, and in which language do I apply to the court?
- Between private parties a letter in English works where the debtor reads it; if in doubt, send the German version of this demand, sold as its own document. The Landgericht and other Liechtenstein authorities work in German only, so the application for the payment order, and any copy of this demand you file with it, must be in German.
- What interest can be added to an overdue debt under Liechtenstein law?
- The statutory interest of 5% a year (§ 1000 Abs. 1 ABGB), which compensates the creditor for late payment of money (§ 1333 Abs. 1 ABGB), unless another rate was agreed. Between businesses the statutory rate is eight percentage points above the reference rate, published each half-year by the Office of Economic Affairs, plus a flat CHF 60.00 (Art. 336b and 336d ADHGB). Interest runs from the agreed payment day or, where none was set, from the creditor's demand (§ 1334 ABGB). The letter claims no collection fee.
- Does sending a final demand keep a Liechtenstein claim from becoming time-barred?
- No. Only the debtor's acknowledgement, or a claim filed and properly pursued, interrupts limitation (§ 1497 ABGB). The application for a payment order has that effect like a claim (§ 589 Abs. 1 ZPO), but if the debtor objects, limitation counts as suspended only until the objection (§ 589 Abs. 2 ZPO). If the period is close to its end, act at court rather than wait for a reply.
