The record made when a car changes hands — on a sale, at the start of a rental, or on collection after a repair. The odometer reading and the description of the visible damage at that moment are the only things that later tell existing damage apart from damage caused since. The record also lists what was handed over: keys, registration document, insurance policies, tyres, jack, first-aid kit.

Common questions

Is a record compulsory on the sale of a car?

No. Ownership passes under the contract; the record proves the condition the car was handed over in and what was given with it. Without it, an argument about the mileage, a missing second key or damage noticed two days later is conducted purely from memory.

What do I write if the buyer notices damage later?

That is exactly why the record is signed at the moment of handover rather than afterwards. Describe the visible damage as specifically as you can — which door, which tyre, which lamp. An empty "visible damage" field is later read as a statement that there was none.

Can it be used for a rental or after a repair?

Yes, and that is why the first field is the reason for the handover. You enter the rental agreement, the sale, or the collection after a repair. On a rental the same record is completed a second time on return, so that there is something to compare.

Is a notary needed for the record?

No. The record is signed by the two parties alone. Notarisation concerns the signatures on the contract for the sale of a registered vehicle, not the record that goes with it.
