Common questions
- Is a chargeback request in German a legal right in Liechtenstein?
- No. A chargeback comes from the card schemes' rules, such as Visa's and Mastercard's, which let your card issuer ask the trader's bank for the money back. A payment you never authorised is different: report it at once, since the law on payment services gives a separate right to a refund.
- When must a chargeback request in German reach a card issuer in Liechtenstein?
- The card schemes set the time limits, and issuers may apply their own, so ask as soon as you know something went wrong, usually after giving the trader a chance to put it right. Keep the receipt, the order confirmation and every message with the trader.
- What can I do in Liechtenstein if my card issuer refuses a chargeback requested in German?
- Ask for its final answer in writing, with reasons. For a bank established in Liechtenstein, the Conciliation Board for Financial Services (Schlichtungsstelle im Finanzdienstleistungsbereich, schlichtungsstelle.li) handles consumer complaints free of charge (Art. 4 Abs. 1 Bst. c and Art. 12 AStG). You can still pursue the trader directly.
