For a tenant in Italy who wants to sublet a room in the home they live in: the notice to the landlord required by art. 2 of Italian Law no. 392 of 27 July 1978, naming the subtenant, the length of the sublet and the rooms sublet. Unless the lease forbids it, a partial sublet needs no consent from the landlord, only this notice by registered letter; subletting the whole home or assigning the lease does need the landlord's consent. Common questions

Can a tenant in Italy sublet a room without the landlord's permission?
Yes, unless the lease forbids it: art. 2 of Italian Law no. 392 of 27 July 1978 allows the tenant to sublet part of the home without consent, by notifying the landlord by registered letter naming the subtenant, the length and the rooms sublet. Subletting the whole home or assigning the lease to another tenant does need the landlord's consent.
What must the sublet notice to an Italian landlord contain?
What the statute lists: the subtenant's identity, the length of the sublet and the rooms sublet (art. 2 of Italian Law no. 392 of 27 July 1978), plus the details of the lease. The notice is sent by registered letter before the sublet begins. The document also states that the tenant still lives in the home and remains answerable to the landlord for the rent and the other obligations.
Can an Italian landlord object to a tenant subletting a room?
Only if the lease forbids subletting: then written consent is needed, and subletting without it can be a ground for ending the lease. If the lease is silent, notice is enough for a partial sublet; the landlord cannot prevent it, but the tenant answers to the landlord for the subtenant's conduct and for the rent. Before sending the letter, read the subletting clause of your own lease again.
