For a passenger whose flight arrived three hours or more late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, or who was denied boarding, on a flight covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004: every flight from an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, and flights into them on an airline from one of those countries. The letter claims the fixed compensation — €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, by distance — from the airline that operated the flight. The airline's own claim form and the EU complaint form are free and do the same job. Send it by registered post and keep the receipt.

Common questions

How much compensation can I claim for a delayed or cancelled flight in Liechtenstein?
Per passenger: €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less; €400 for longer flights within the EU and for other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km; €600 for other flights over 3,500 km. The airline may halve the sum if it rerouted you and you arrived within two, three or four hours of the original time, by distance, and for a delay of three to four hours on a flight over 3,500 km. Nothing is owed for extraordinary circumstances the airline could not have avoided, such as bad weather or air traffic control restrictions.
Which flights does Regulation 261/2004 cover for a passenger in Liechtenstein?
Every flight departing from an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, on any airline, and flights into them from elsewhere on an airline from one of those countries; the Regulation is part of the EEA Agreement, and Liechtenstein itself has no airport. You claim from the airline that operated the flight, even if you booked with another. Whatever the compensation, the airline must also give you meals, refreshments and, where needed, a hotel while you wait; keep receipts for what you had to pay yourself.
Where can I complain in Liechtenstein if the airline refuses to pay?
Complain to the airline first. If it refuses, or does not answer, the national enforcement body responsible handles complaints about flights from the airports of its country and flights into them from third countries (for Zurich the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL), bazl.admin.ch; for German airports the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt, lba.de; Liechtenstein has notified no body of its own to the European Commission). For a money claim you can go to the competent court. A court claim must be brought within the time the law allows, so do not leave it long after the airline's answer.

  • Chargeback request to your card issuer (Liechtenstein)

For someone in Liechtenstein who paid by debit or credit card and did not get what they paid for — goods never delivered, faulty or not as described, a refund never paid, a payment taken twice — and could not settle it with the trader. The letter asks the card provider to raise a chargeback under the card scheme's rules and to answer in writing. Many providers have a free online dispute form that does the same job; ask the trader first.

  • Package holiday complaint (Liechtenstein)

For a traveller whose package holiday — transport and accommodation, or other travel services, sold together — was not as booked. The letter tells the organiser that it is responsible for every service in the package under Art. 12(1) of the Package Travel Act (PRG), and claims a price reduction and compensation, with a total and 14 days to reply. The Office of Economic Affairs (Amt für Volkswirtschaft) settles, free of charge, disputes between consumers and traders established in Liechtenstein that no other conciliation body handles (Art. 1 Abs. 1, Art. 4 Abs. 3 and Art. 12 AStG). • Notice of defect: repair or replacement of goods (Liechtenstein)

An English letter to a seller in Liechtenstein when goods you bought are faulty: you rely on the statutory warranty (Gewährleistung), ask at your choice for repair or replacement and set a dated deadline. For purchases from 1 March 2026 the rights lapse three months after the two-year warranty period; for earlier ones you must sue within two years of delivery. This letter stops neither.
