Referral to the housing conciliation commission (France)
For a tenant or landlord in France in dispute over rent, a rent supplement, the inventory of condition, the deposit, service charges, repairs, decency or a notice. The French letter asks the commission départementale de conciliation, free and made up of landlords' and tenants' representatives, to bring the parties together (art. 20 of the French law of 6 July 1989), sets out the dispute and the request and lists the documents. By registered letter with proof of receipt to the address the préfecture publishes.
PACS agreement — civil solidarity pact (France)
For two adults about to enter a PACS at the town hall (before a notary, the notary drafts the agreement). A PACS is declared on Cerfa form 15725, and a free model agreement exists (Cerfa 15726), on service-public.gouv.fr: you do not need DocMuse to enter a PACS. Our own French agreement refers to the law and to articles 515-1 to 515-7 of the French Civil Code and lets you choose the material support and the property regime: separate property or joint ownership. Signed by hand on paper: article 1175 of the French Civil Code excludes the electronic form.
Written complaint to your bank (France)
For a customer of a French bank who disputes charges, a transaction, a refusal or a service: the letter to the complaints department, in French under French law, describes the problem, says what you ask for and recalls the response times — acknowledgement within ten working days and an answer within two months, or fifteen working days for a payment service (article L. 133-45 of the French Monetary and Financial Code). It is the step required before the free bank mediator. Send it by registered post or through the bank's messaging.
Request to write off an overpayment from the CAF, CPAM or France Travail (France)
For someone who must repay a benefit paid in error (an overpayment) and cannot afford it, in mainland France or the overseas departments other than Mayotte. Without disputing the debt, the French letter asks for a full or partial write-off, or a payment plan, setting out the household's income, outgoings and situation; the law allows the claim to be reduced or cancelled for hardship, except for fraud or false declarations. To dispute the overpayment itself, an appeal is needed instead. Sold blank, to complete by hand, social security number included. Sent by registered post.
Request for unpaid leave, a sabbatical or business start-up leave (France)
A request from an employee in mainland France or an overseas department other than Mayotte to suspend the contract without pay: unpaid leave (congé sans solde), which the employer is free to grant, a sabbatical (articles L. 3142-28 et seq. of the French Labour Code) or leave to set up or take over a business (articles L. 3142-105 et seq.). It gives the dates and, where relevant, the reason or the business's activity. For the two statutory leaves, send it at least three months (sabbatical) or two months (start-up) ahead, in a way that proves the date (registered post with proof of receipt, or hand delivery against a receipt), unless a collective agreement says otherwise. In French.
Request to end the sale or reduce the price for lack of conformity (France)
For a consumer in France whose faulty item was not repaired or replaced: the seller refused, did nothing within thirty days, the defect persists after repair, or it is too serious to wait. You choose between ending the sale, with the price refunded against return of the item, and a price reduction while keeping it (Article L. 217-14 of the French Consumer Code). In French, to send by registered post with proof of receipt, with the proof of purchase and your first request.

The application itself is made on Cerfa form 16233 (adult) or 16234 (minor), free on service-public.gouv.fr: you do not need DocMuse for it. This French letter goes with the form: it sets out the legitimate interest the civil registrar weighs (article 60 of the French Civil Code) and lists the proof enclosed. It is filed at the town hall of residence or of the place of birth, often by appointment.

The letter, in French under French law, states where the debt comes from and how much it is, sets a payment deadline, starts interest at the legal rate (article 1344-1 of the French Civil Code) and proposes an amicable solution or a free conciliateur de justice, a step required before suing for claims up to €5,000. Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.

For obtaining from a French administration — town hall, préfecture, public hospital, school, public body — a copy of a document it holds: a decision, a report, a file, minutes. The letter, in French under French law, cites the right of access (articles L. 311-1 ff. of the French Code of Relations between the Public and the Administration), lists the documents, the chosen form of access and partial disclosure, and recalls that one month's silence counts as refusal, opening referral to the CADA. Send it by registered letter with proof of receipt.

For handing the day-to-day running of your affairs to someone close during an absence, a hospital stay or a stay abroad: paying bills, collecting income, dealing with public offices. Written in general terms, it covers acts of administration only (article 1988 of the French Civil Code); selling or giving away property needs an express power. To arrange your own protection in advance should your faculties decline, the mandat de protection future (Cerfa 13592 or a notarial deed) is the route the law provides. Signed by principal and agent, in two copies.

For an unmarried couple without a PACS who live together in France and want to set their own rules in writing, since the law provides almost none (article 515-8 of the French Civil Code): who owns the furniture and purchases, how rent and expenses are shared, what happens to the home and joint property on separation. For a landlord in France whose tenant owes rent or charges. The French letter lists the months owed and the total, sets a payment date, offers a payment plan and the free help available (ADIL, CAF, the housing solidarity fund), then states the next step: a formal demand for payment served by a commissaire de justice, then the lease's termination clause, six weeks after an unanswered demand, or two months where a lease signed before July 2023 says so. The referral is free and can be made by simple e-mail; the conciliator's contact details are usually given on the refusal and on impots.gouv.fr.
